hi guys, I've been giving a smashing dell laptop by my uncle, its hardly been used but it has windows vista installed. I have a disc for windows 7, can I simply install that over Vista or do I need to uninstall it?

Put the disc in, and you will get an option to upgrade.

You're better off clean installing, usually. You'll end up with a speedier machine. You can of course try the upgrade route if you like though.

When the cd boots up you'll get an option of formatting the hard drive. Format the hard drive and do a clean install.

do you think I should be connected to the net when I do this?

Ideally, yes. Windows can download and install basic drivers for you that way. If you're not it should still go fine though. The only thing you might have to do is stick drivers for your motherboard's network adapter on a USB stick to install afterwards so you can get the rest of the stuff going.
