Tesla Model E

This car was unofficially announced to be in development last year and will join the Model S (available to buy) and Model X (scheduled for late 2014/early 2015) which funnily enough produces Models S E X, so they might need to think about that when it does get announced :p

    http://ecomento.com/2014/03/04/electric-tesla-model-e-half-price-20-percent-smaller-70000-model-s/

The big item released by Elon Musk (Tesla CEO) is as follows:
“For our vehicle after the Model X we’re aiming to produce a smaller car than the Model S – maybe 20 percent smaller – but it will probably halve the cost, which is around $35,000 with a 200-mile useable range,” Musk said.

Despite what the article says, this would actually probably be on par with a BMW 3 Series or Audi A3 as the Model S is pretty big. So these two facts are the deciding factors. A 200 mile (320km) range is enough for probably 95% of the population of Ireland. A trip from Dublin to Cork is approx. 255km. Doing the usual conversion of USD to Euro, we're looking at a approx. 35k euros.

So taking into consideration less maintenance costs and cheaper running costs, would the idea of a 35k, 320km range, BMW 3 Series-esque, electric vehicle make you jump ship from a traditional petrol/diesel powered vehicle?

Would you consider a 35k, 320km range electric car for your next purchase? 46 votes

Yes, hit the sweet spot for me in terms of affordability and acessability

Yes, but only if it was stylish enough and had similar features to a similarly priced ICE car

    You should make a poll

    You forgot one option

No, because Electric cars suck as a second hand purchase.

    48KW battery pack.

It could have well over 250bhp, with 400nm of torque from 0 rpm.

This thing could be eating GTI's off the line and costing zilch to run.

    I'm in.

E.G. I can buy a 5 year old car with 150000 km on it with a large portion of the value wiped off and it still drives the same distance it drove from day one.

Can stick on another 300-400k km on it and it still gives the same range.

Whereas with electric the range is slowly decreasing over time.

    Define roaring trade for me.

I'd be curious about it. They'd have to give it a proper dash though. Quite like the model s, but that touch screen is appalling.

Can't really comment because the budget for my next car will be about €1000 so I can't really imagine what I would buy with 35k at my disposal!

Saying that though, if I won the lotto I would strongly consider a model S. It'll out drag an M5 and has a 400km range. It's very seldom that I want to travel more than that in a day.
As for the E, if I had the money it would definitely be on the short list :)

    Roaring was tongue in cheek.

    Hurrah! Another EV thread :)

The new e-Golf reviewed by Robert Llewellyn and a sneak peek at the Golf GTE plug-in hybrid.

As long as Tesla have an official presence in Ireland, I would love to buy a new Model E. It would be nice if Tesla announced plans to extend their supercharger network to Ireland as well.

I'm certainly keeping an eye on Tesla to see what they come out with. I have a Nissan Leaf for 3 years now. In another 2 to 3 years time we would be thinking of keeping it, but getting another EV that was bigger and with more range. With every Tesla you get free charging for life at their supercharger networks. As much as I love my Nissan, I'll definitely be considering a Tesla Model E when the time comes.

You'd probably be throwing cash at it left, right and centre.

Am I mistaken tho thinking that ICEs efficiency does decrease with time? Obviously not to the extent of a battery tho.

TBH the poll doesn't really apply to you then and in fairness, I would imagine only a very small portion of the country would be driving cars with 200km+ on the clock.
