Should I Stay or Should I Go

    Hi All,

I have a tricky decision to make. I have been offered 2 jobs. One in Luxembourg with a large multi-national for good money and another one in Cork with a smaller company but less money (Approx 50% Less). (I'm currently living in Cork).
The job in Cork would be more interesting even though the money is less, however, I'm stuck on my decision between the following:

    a) going to a new place for adventure and more money, but potentially boring job and potentially lonely, or

    b) staying in Cork near friends and family, but with less money, but more interesting job.

For some reason, I'm really struggling with this one.

    Any help appreciated.

Based solely on the information you have given,I would be inclined to stay in Cork

If you break it down to pros and cons

Luxemburg: PRO's Foreign travel , good wages, experience with large multi national CONS Foreign country, high cost of living, no family or friends near you, you will have to pay rent, bills, and other costs which will most likely negate any gain you would make from the higher wages, the posibility of having to learn French or German( if you dont already speak them) Very easy to get forgotten in a large multi national

Cork: PRO'S Stay and live at home near friends and family,Interesting job, you wont have to adjust to a new way of life, smaller company more chance of recognition of your skills and achievements and reward for such CON'S Smaller wages, less foreign travel

I'd take the money and new opportunity in a new country.

You'll make new friends, you can be in daily contact with your family and you can come home if you get tired of it.

    No brainer for me.

Living abroad does broaden the horizons significantly (imo, I did about 2.5 years in Italy before moving home to Cork) - I would consider taking the LU position for this reason alone if you've never lived/worked outside of Ireland.

I can't offer you much advice on the multi-national/SMB thing - I personally dislike working within multinationals and prefer small-to-medium businesses for atmosphere, quality of life... but that's a completely personal preference.

    The thing that jumps out above all in your post is this though;
The job in Cork would be more interesting

if you're certain that this is the case, that would be the deciding factor for me.

Best of luck with whatever path you choose!

Interesting work vs boring work. Listen to yourself.

Luxembourg is a soulless dump. Had the misfortune to spend must of a summer there with work two years ago. Fiscal paradises are not renowned for being the most happening of places as a rule but it’s a tiny city with no atmosphere and nothing going on. It’s worse than Zurich and that is saying something!

Steer well clear in my opinion.
