My wife and I are going on a motoring holiday in S. France etc in June and
need info / experiences re camping sites in Costa Brava Spain that offer
    cottages/mobiles/chalets for hire.
We would like a location well North of Barcelona, as far as possible !!
that is on the coast and near urban/town/restaurants etc

Have look at Blanes. There is a very nice campsite on the southern edge of the town. It's just across the road from the beach, as far as I can recall. Was there in 2000. Restaurants and bars within walking distance.

I agree, Blanes is great and there's a fantastic festival in July if you were around at that time.
Heading towards France you would have Lloret de Mar next which is pretty lively and touristy. Further up you have Tossa, very nice little town.
If you follow the coast road from Tossa towards the border you will find a few campsites http://www.campingpola.es/en/camping-pola-costa-brava-tossa-de-mar-spain.html Never stayed but looks nice!
There's loads of lovely beaches in little coves too, my own favourite is through these gates https://www.google.ie/maps/@41.756556,2.973396,3a,75y,120.61h,83.66t/data=!3m4!1e1!3m2!1sfj23hVk2VxZofmHABp-AjA!2e0!6m1!1e1
There's no signs to say there's a beach but if go through the gates and follow a dirt track for a few hundred metres you'll come to a carpark beside the beach. Think it's about €5 for the day but well worth it. Always been quiet when we were there. Like many of the beaches in this area it's clothing optional ;)
