Which Callaway Irons

I’ve started playing golf again and I’m definitely a high handicapper (28) but I wanted to change my current irons for a new (second-hand) set. The Irons im currently using are an old knock off brand that I purchased about 14 years ago but never really used.

From speaking with friends and one of the nice guys in a local golf shop, I’ve narrowed it down to two different sets of Callaway Irons.

    • Callaway Razr X irons 5-Sw
    • Callaway X-Hot Steel Irons

My problem is that I’ve no idea which is the best club for me and because they are both two years old the Golf shops can no longer demo them.

Could anyone help me out? Which do you think would be the best set for a beginner \ game improver?

    Thanks

If the shops in question have a fitting bay and the irons in stock, you can demo them there, they will put a bit of tape on them and away you go.

both models are very similar. not sure u will get either 2nd hand just yet still only 24 and 12 months old.
either set is very user friendly.
Try the new x2hot if you want a similar look and feel your local shop will have demos of them

    Hi Static,
wasting your time asking for recommendations on here
Only way is to go a try both at a fitting centre using flightscope or some other yoke.
Callaway might not even suit you.
Friend of mine went to get a fitting for an XHOT 2
Left ordering a PING 25 that he plays great with

Lots of Razr x sets for sale on adverts.ie - one set for 200 quid if I recall

Wonder is that a good thing or a bad thing ?

Static, the best advice is obviously to get some sort of fitting done and go from there. However, if you're reasonably "normal" (if you know what I mean !) and don't want to go to that hassle, the X-Hot would be a good buy if buying blind. They are plenty forgiving for a beginner/improver and are also more than enough club for when you improve and the handicap drops. If you don't like them or they don't like you, they'd be easy enough to sell on without too much of a hit.

Shaft is key, again, a fitting would be best, but if you swing at a good fast speed (get someone you know, or a pro, to look at you and be the judge) then stiff will likely work fine. I can't remember what the stock shaft is in the X-Hot but, to be honest, if you got regular, they'd probably be fine too. There's no universal standard for shaft stiffness and companies tend to put shafts that suit the masses in their products.

But, in an ideal world, get a fitting.

    As above,

McGuirks can fit you for €40 (free if you buy them new)

Hit the ones you like the look of and this years models of the Callways your asking about at but ask for some recommendations aswell. Once you find the club you hit best, look for last years (or two year old) model of it and get it cheapy cheap on adverts. The advancements are very little over most of the clubs year on year.

Thank you everyone, on your combined advice I'm going to organise a fitting session in one of the local shops. The coach I meet last night as offered to do it as part of the training package.

So after three coaching sessions where we can work on my swing he will organise a fitting and we can look for a set of second hand clubs which suit my style\ability.

Again, thank you for the good advice
