Whey protein for 5 a side footballer......Yay or Nay?

    Hey

I play four games of 5 a side a week. The games on average probably only last 45-50 minutes by the time they get going. I am though pretty active in them. I by and large keep going for the full game and don't sit back in defence or stand upfront. Im fit enough compared to the people I play with anyway. If a games cancelled I do a 7k run; so pretty much maintain the same level of exercise year round.

My main goal I suppose is I don't want to gain or loose weight just maintain where im at but recover better between games. I do no resistance exercise is there any point in me taking whey protein? Will it help me recover quicker between games without weight gain or loss? I would probably just take it straight after a game to aid recovery.

    Thanks

It depends on what you normally eat. It's a supplement so you only need it if you're not getting enough protein through food.

You won't put on weight because of it...unless you drink industrial-sized quantities of it on a daily basis.

Yeah I would probably only use it straight after a game. Wouldn't be using much of the stuff. I dont think im taking in enough protein; im 6 foot and 12 and a half stone and from what I see online I should be taking in 100 grams of protein (could be wrong) Can you recommend a brand that tastes decent with about a 100/20 calorie/protein ratio?

I do exactly this at the moment (and use it after the gym)
Its only been about a month so havent noticed anything yet, but also no negative (weight gain) impacts.

I think you want to have it ASAP after the game, within the "hour of power" for it to do any use (if you believe it does at all)

If you go to MyProtein, Bulkpowders or theproteinworks, you'll be able to see what's available. I don't know what flavours, if any, you might like.

Yeah that's what I have been hearing too. Take it in 30 minutes after exercising. Have you noticed you recover better between exercise?

It doesn't matter when you take it really. Don't worry about cramming it into you asap.

OP, myprotein, bulkpowders gonutrition and theproteinworks all sell what you want.

Taking a shake after sport for no real reason isn't beneficial though. If you are getting your required protein already there is no need to supplement. Real food sources should be where you go to first also.

    Ignore those people ;)

    Thanks for the advice

I actually don't think I get enough protein. Yesterday for example I only took in 80 grams (other days I say I have less) defo aint hiiting 100g a day anyway. What has me looking into this is I recently tore my hamstring so am looking into I suppose more nutritional support for my exercise, help recovery, protect against injury. Also to help with not burning muscle instead of fat.

If you cant get the extra amount from foods then a shake is cheap and easy.

In the overall scheme of things, protein plays a relatively small role in preventing hamstring tears when you play football.
