2k budget, what has caught my eye

Another what car should I buy thread!

I've been looking/scouring the net as past few days. Looking for a wee motor for myself on a budget of around the 2k mark. I reckon I'll do around 12000 miles/year mostly on motorway. I don't think I can justify a diesel when tax and servicing are factored in, plus most diesels have astronomical mileage in my budget from what I've seen. I have my search narrowed down to the following:
    Focus 1.4 or TDDi
    Golf 1.4 or Tdi
    Pugeot 307 1.4
    Passat Tdi

I'm looking at the bangornomics thread but nothing jumps out at me of late. Of the cars listed, which would be the better choice? I worked out using a spreadsheet I found here that a 1.4 petrol doing 40mpg against a diesel doing 55mpg would cost around €400 more in petrol but I would save on the tax and servicing.

    Any advice greatly appreciated!

Any €2k diesel version of those cars will have hefty mileage on them at this stage of their life and possibly need some big work done just around the corner. At 12k miles per year I don't think you need or have the benefit of a diesel car taking potential maintenance, tax, etc. into account and your €2k budget will go a lot further on a petrol car imo.

Of that lot though the Focus is probably the best in petrol form but all of them are dog slow in 1.4 litre especially if you are doing motorway driving. A petrol Toyota Corolla would be much more spirited in that aspect.

Cheers, just thinking would a 1.6 petrol suit any better as it's mostly long spins I will be doing, cork to Dublin and back once a week. I'm not to bothered about power, the most economic to cruise the motorway is what I'm after.

Using the wife's 06 corolla 1.4 at the minute, averages around 40mpg on the trip. But sitting at near 4000 rpm at 120kph just doesn't sound right to me!
