    Hi,

I'm thinking of doing a tour of Africa for about a couple of weeks this Summer. Can anyone recommend a tour company and route? I'm flexible date and time wise. Also, thinking of doing some volunteer work (either before or after tour) - would anyone have experience with any organisation they can vouch for? Some of the one's I've checked seem excessive in cost!

    Thanks,
    Donna

Africa is a continent of 54 countries. You'll have to narrow down your request. People might know things and some regions/countries and not others, and tour operators often specialise in regions/countries.

Yeah realised how ridiculous my request for a recommendation for 'Africa' sounded :) but just hoping to hear of others recent enough experiences. I was looking at landtours from cape town to Nairobi but perhaps shorter tours in just one country would be best. Also just heard of the bomb blasts in Kenya..not sure about safety? Thanks for any advise.

I did a trip with Intrepid Travel for safari in Kenya and Tanzania a few years ago and loved it. About 8-9 days in total and i had a few extra days added on myself.

Well, southern Africa is fine - you can even just do it yourself through a mixture of driving and busing (Intercape travels all the way from Cape Town up to Victoria Falls if you fancy it. From each place, you can easily get yourself sorted and grab tours that way.

Intercape means taking in South Africa, Botswana, Namibia, Zambia, Zimbabwe, maybe Swaziland and Mozambique.

Flying regionally can be pricy, but sometimes decent value.

So, on one holiday, I flew from Jo'burg to Windhoek, and from there sorted out a private tour across the desert to the coast, hung around, then got a bus back to Windhoek and then Intercape to Cape Town then ... I think I flew back to Bloemfontein (I was living in Lesotho at the time), then got a local bus (not recommended, but there's safety in numbers).

As for driving around ... heyyyy ...

So, that's what I did, but others would have many other experiences and you'll probably have an idea what you want to do.

But go for it. Africa (what I saw of it) is a great continent and, generally, it's perfectly safe (if you're not thick).
