Guys and girls im a total disaster when it comes to home improvements and my sitting room is in bad need of a make over, so any help on a colour scheme would be very welcome. Its a standard size sitting room that you would have seen built on a any estate built in the boom time, with a wooden floor, a black fireplace and a 2 and 3 seater black couch. My walls are painted with magnolia and any tips on a nice 2 tone paint scheme would be welcome

Post a pic and get more replies. Switch lights on to brighten the room when shooting.

No one does two tone any more. A light French grey from little Greene company is so nice. You can get any paint shop to mix it with any paint brand you want

Would you wallpaper one wall with paper of subtle design in a shade the same as painted walls?

It's a personal choice but I always find a feature wall norm fireplace wall always looks well with either a rich teal and other walls a light grey, (looks lovely with cream /white and every summer stripes with spring colors come back around ) or a deep rich purple and rest of the walls stay magnolia. I have the purple as I find it is not too heavy for summer yet so cozy at Christmas time. And with both colors mentioned above so easy to give the house a new fresh look with just accessories every year ! Hope that helps! Best of luck with painting :-)

I totally agree with this suggestion!
A contrast colour feature wall if the room is fairly big, a toning (lighter or darker) shade of the main colour if the room is small.
You can do the chimney breast or just the recesses either side for different effects.

Use the Dulux Mouse Painter on Dulux.ie to try out a few ideas with colour, I think you can upload your own pictures.

Do you mean painting the room in just one colour when you say no one does two tone any more - what about feature wall as mentioned by other posters . Also from looking at some of the interior design/ home decorating magazines , there seems to be a trend for combining varying shades of muted colours in rooms ? Or am I reading the current trends wrong ?
We will be in same boat shortly , some painting to be done in living room, long'ish narrow room, facing west with patio doors at other end. The look we want is cosy yet contemporary - if that's not a contradiction in terms ?? No furniture bought yet so a blank canvas ! Ideas welcome
    Thanks !

Natural Canvas is a nice shade , should look well with what you have

Try tempting taupe from dulux. It's a soft neutral colour and will blend with the hallway colour.

do you have any coving in the room? I think these make a nice addition to any living room especially if you have a wooden floor with black fireplace

We struggled with many colours for our living room for years starting with yellows etc, but eventually settled on a colour called Antique gold on the walls and antique cream on the coving.
Think it was a dulux color but if you are near celbridge my advice would be go into Colortrend and they have so many different colors on display in there you will have plenty choices
Their paint aswell is very good...another great colour is french white. I just did all the woodwork in my main bedroom this colour and stained the floorboards a dark oak and it really compliments eachother

+1 for colourtrend paints, there is a quality finish to it over Dulux/Crown, worth paying the extra IMO

    Hi forever 21
What colour would you recommend for the woodwork if you were painting with tempting taupe?

Hi shellyg if your leaving the woodwork in the hall white I would be inclined to go with white but if your going to paint it the same colour as the sitting room I think a ivory white would be lovely & soft with it. Ivory White in a satin wood so easy to keep clean. These colours are neutral so then any colour you want to bring into the room can be done with cushions & a throw draped over the arm of the sofa & nice big rug on the floor. Whatever you go for let us see the end result. Just throw up a few pics so to give others ideas.

Anyone use Fleetwood paints in their sitting room / bedroom areas ? Some nice neutral colours in the Fleetwood paints catalogue but just wondering about quality, endurance etc .. Otherwise I'm thinking of something in the Colourtrend range, might even be tempted to try out something from the new'ish Dulux Signature colour collection? Any comments or experiences with these paint brands ? Our budget doesn't extend to Farrow & Ball etc, just looking for reasonably priced decent quality paint that will look well. All comments welcome

Stay away from Fleetwood, Colourtrend or Dulux are fine. The Colourtrend Matt is one of the best products , if you want something a bit cheaper , half the price of Colourtrend and still a good product would be Glidden soft sheen

I would disagree with you about Fleetwood, I would rate it over Dulux at the moment, using their popular card a lot these days and finding the colour matches spot on , Colortrend excellent quality also but pricey.

Colortrend is a top quality paint, the best to apply and best finish. It does cost a bit more but at €55- €60 for 5 lits is well worth it considering you may not be painting the room again for 4 or 5 years.
You will blow that on a night out easily.

Fleetwood is one of the best paints you can use.
