Replacing toilet seat

Are there different sizes of toilets and seats?

Trying to replace toilet seat and bought one which should fit 'standard' toilets.

It doesn't fit, the fittings aren't right.

How would you go about getting a toilet seat that fits?

Is there a measurement or something or a model number that a hardware worker would match a seat to?

There are differnt styles of seats which suit different styles of toilets, but if its an ordinary standard toilet then an ordinary seat should fit it, Seats are adjustable to small extent in that they can be adjusted forward and back and left to right up to a point.

In what way does your seat not fit? does it overhang the toilet or is it short?

Got sorted. I wasn't doing the fitting lol. Himself indoors was. There's down fittings and cross fittings or something. New toilet seat now installed! I often feel like the woman in the ad 'DONAL!!!!'

This thread is still from this year, so I hope its not classed as regurgitating an old one.....:P

......You would think that fitting one would be straight forward, but I seem to be having some issues with one I am "trying" to replace.First the one I bought was cracked after I took it out of the box.I brought it back to the shop and I got another one from them uncracked this time.

When I fitted it, it is up too high from the surface of the toilet at the hinge and so its not lying flat so the bump stops are not resting on the rim of the bowl. The problem is that the metal hinge is too far protruding from the mounting holes as can be seen in the pics.If I was to sit on it, I guess that it would crack the seat/cover.

The old hinge arrangement is a cheap crappy plastic type, hence why it didnt last, but its lying flat on the rim whereas the new one has metal pins, but there is a more larger gap.

I thought they were all standard.I suppose I will have to go back to the shop again, but I am worried I may be escorted from the premises this time.....:D

Top one is the old one.

The new one looks like one of the universal type, they can be a bit awkward to get right. Loosen up all the fittings and get the seat in the right position, then start to assemble the hinge and nut set.

Thanks, I will have another stab at it again soon. These are the two types of hinges.
    Here are both types.

I had another stab at it and its not going to fit because as can be see in the pic, the hinge pin is two high for the hole in the seat when its flat on the bowl.I dont know why its like this but back to the shop so.
