Famous People and Random Acts of Kindness

Its all to easy to have a go at famous people these days! Some deserve it, others might get unfairly abused from time to time. Either way, not nearly as often do we hear these 'celebs' getting praised for something good that they've done. But has there been any time when a random act of kindness by a famous person really got you in the feels?

Take Eddie Jordan. I was reading this article about him:
    http://www.crash.net/f1/news/200958/1/jordan-f1-collection-up-for-sale.html?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=rss

He's putting his personal F1 collection up for sale, all to raise money for a couple of charities! And its not just a bunch of meaningless items. The collection includes the first Jordan F1 car ever built (and driven by Michael Schumacher), the German's original helmet, the first race-winning Jordan chassis, the constructors' world championship trophy from that race, Damon Hill's racesuit and helmet, 12 drivers' and constructors' world championship trophies and eight helmets belonging to former Jordan drivers.

I could maybe understand if he was broke and needed the money. But he's giving up a lot of incredible stuff, pieces of Formula 1 history, things he worked so hard for and its all just to help out some charities! I honestly doubt I could ever be that selfless. In fact I know if I had a few thousand to spare I'd be buying some of that memorabilia and not giving it to charity! Lots of respect for EJ after this!

And then it turned out Bruce Springsteen paid for me dinner! Or something.

Saw a rather bizarre but interesting documentary on Friday night with Will i Am being interviewed by the delightful Joanna Lumley over the course of a few days in LA and he does amazing work for charity. He's ploughed a lot of money (I think €15million) into a further education centre for kids from the projects and he's donated a good bit to the charities in the UK as well. Seems like a decent sort.

Robbie Williams ceasing to release records is a great act of charity.

I saw an interview with Dick York who played Darrin in Bewitched a few years ago. At the time he was dying from emphysema and was hooked up to a breathing machine. Even before he had developed emphysema he had been in constant agony with a bad back. Years earlier he had to retire from Bewitched after collapsing on the set (which is why he was replaced by Dick Sargent) and hadn't worked since. At the time of the interview he was living on social welfare.

Despite his ill health and the fact he wasn't a rich man he was spending every minute of his time trying to help the homeless.

I can't find the video of the interview but here's an article where he's being interviewed, although it has more impact when you actually see him in agony and unable to breath on his own but talking about more about other peoples problems than his own.

Not quite the same thing, but this is a nice example of somebody becoming famous and not forgetting their roots.

    From the soccer forum:

Cristiano Ronaldo pays for brain operation for 10-month-old boy

    http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showpost.php?p=89437700&postcount=276
Young Erik Ortiz Cruz, a Real supporter, required the €60,000 procedure to remove a part of his brain, before a series of treatments that cost €6,000 each time. Little Erik's case came to Ronaldo's attention when he was asked to donate some boots for a charity auction, and the Galatico went one better and agreed to pay for all of the treatments.

I should have known a thread praising a famous person would never take off! If its not moaning or complaining about 'celebs', the majority are not interested it seems!!
