A better value alternative to UPC in Dublin?

    Hello.

We have our broadband/tv/phone package with UPC. We don't need the phone at all but that's their package. We are paying €66 per month, but they also charge us for refusing to trust them enough to pay them by direct debit, a fee which irks me. We are out of contract. What are our options?

I read this opening post from 2010 but it hasn't been edited to mention Sky or Magnet as an alternative supplier of a broadband/tv package in Dublin. They are now, aren't they? Are there any more competitors to UPC in Dublin?

Essentially, we'd like fast internet connection and fairly basic tv in Dublin at a reasonable price. €66 plus is not that price. Would anybody have recommendations? Thank you.

Sky + Sky broadband = Probably slow internet(depends where your house is and the length of the phone line, you need to have a line in situe or they'll tell you to go to somebody else) but a good tv experience. Needs a dish on the roof.

Eircom + Evision in Fibre areas = up to 100Mb broadband, depends where your cabinet is, TV product isnt as slick as that of Sky or UPC, but its a bit cheaper.

    Saorview + Vodafone's broadband-only package.

Saorview is a once-off payment if you need someone to install it or need to buy an antenna + decoder box and Vodafone's broadband-only package is €35.

To be fair, they stopped charging the non direct debit fee recently, and there are cheaper tv and broadband packages you could change to as well, eg value tv and 50mb unlimited or with 30gb limit for €55/€48 a month.

Check out the lower tiered 'Value' packages. You'll find that they are quite good value.
    Good bang for your buck.

Could you possibly throw us a postcode or rough location so that we can made further recommendations?

know some people with sky broadband and they say it's great. Sees reliable enough. Also Sky > all other tv providers.

Ok, Sky Broadband is awful, it only goes up to 24mb/s (versus up to 200mb/s with UPC). Many people are getting pretty awful speeds with Sky, I wouldn't touch them with a ten foot pole.

The best value for money is actually UPC. Really there are no other cheaper packages if you want both TV and Broadband.

There are however a few money saving tips:

    1) Call UPC and tell them that you are thinking to move to Sky, that UPC is too expensive. They will usually given you a big reduction on your package. As much as €20 per month!

    2) If they don't give you a reduction, then they have a range of cheaper products you can change to, for instance:

    - 50mb unlimited BB + TV + phone for €60

    3) If you don't use the TV much then you could cancel the TV and just get BB:

    - 50mb BB for €37
    - 120mb BB for €44

You can then use Saorview or Freeview to watch free over the air channels. You might have a one off fee to get the box/dish for these, but you will often save over a year.

You would be mad to move off UPC.

    UPC basically have no competition.

Thanks. We spoke with UPC and they've brought our monthly bill down to €48.99 from €73.50. The only thing they have reduced for that is our data to 30kb/gb/mb (clearly I'm not sure of the suffix), saying we're only using an average of 15kb/gb/mb per month anyway.

We are on The Essential Bundle Anywhere 150 package. The last time we were charged €3.75 for not paying by direct debit was in our February bill and I checked and the poster above is correct: UPC has removed that charge since. However, the cost of the package increased from €65.99 in the February-March bill to €73.50 for March-April. Swings and roundabouts.

    Thanks again.
