I am ordering 10 pcs of Football Jerseys from China.
They are being posted by EMS at 41USD and the jerseys at 80USD, in all 121USD.
What would be the customs tax on this, anyone know how to calculate it.
I looked it up on customs calculator and it came up as something in the region of 250E !!!

    (((80+41)*Duty%)*VAT%)+Handling Charge

If they are not generic plain jerseys for you local club etc, if inspected chances they will be confiscated.

When is the money (including lost growth) Michael Noonan took in the Pension Levy going to be paid back?

there is zero duty on product up to a value of euro 150 (I think this includes postage) so you are only due to pay 23% VAT plus admin charge which is dependent on whether its DHL or UPS should be max of about 15 euro

As far as I know there is limit to what they can charge for an admin fee which is set by revenue.ie at least for small value consignments such as your own this shoud be the case

EMS will deliver through AN Post at this end and An Post typically charge a handling fee or €6 for a small package. If they don't charge duty on the item at €121 you will then just have to pay an extra 23% VAT along with the additional €6.

Is that 23 %of the valued total goods.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,222 ✭✭✭cargo

It's23% onto thefull invoice value i.e football shirts & shipping charges. In other words what you paid in full to the supplier in China.

If stopped they will send you a letter adding you to email them the invoice ourPayPal screenshot etc and they will reply telling you how much you will need to give the An Post person when they call.

Hi, the supplier I had that was to provide me with the jerseys.
Offered to get it shipped by DHL for 140USD in total.
65USD for DHL and 80USD for product(he gave me a discount of 5USD)
So I was wondering do the tax and customs price for DHL work the same way as all of ye have described.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,222 ✭✭✭cargo

    Yeah it's the same process.

DHL will look for the calculated amount before they hand over the package. As it is a customs / government fee the calculation will not change. The only thing that will be different will be the admin fee that DHL charge.

The €6 I quoted is the An Post fee. Someone else here might know what the DHL fee is.

Just got a call from DHL saying that I would need to pay 12% clothing charge and and on top of that 23% customs(which I am fine with) and on top of that 2% carrying charge by DHL.
The 12% clothing charge I do not get why I have to pay that. I just ordered 4 jerseys 1 month ago, via china post and I had to pay nothing.
Are they right to charge me the clothing charges.

If you have a read of the posts above you'll see 3 separate charges that you may be hit with (and in this case you have been hit with the 3 of them) I'll list them here again and now we know the figures it's easier to explain.

1 - Customs import duty. This is what you / DHL are calling the "Clothing charge". This is the "tax" I couldnt tell you how much it would be as I didn't know what the rate for "Clothing items" was. Every type of product incurs a different percentage charge. i.e. a tv could be 10%, a bookcase 15%, clothes 12% etc. The customs office determine this. DHL are only doing what they tell them.

2 - VAT this is the standard rate of 23%. This will be calculated on the full value after your taxes in #1 above are added in.

3 - Handling fee for collecting the charges above. DHL are charging 2% for this.

Called DHL and they saying I will only pay the VAT.
Got a call from DHL again asking for a proof of payment and I asked and they said I am paying for clothing aswell. ??!?!?!

Don't mean to hijack the thread but I have a similar query on vat. I got an invoice from UPS today on goods worth €39, that's including the shipping cost.

The vat was listed as €9.04 as below

    VAT 9.04
    Other Charges 14.50

    Total Charges 23.54
    Vat 3.34

    Total Amount Due 26.88

I noticed that there is VAT charged twice, once on the actual shipment and then again on the €14.50 handling charge plus the €9.04 Vat. So they have charged VAT on the VAT - is this within the rules ? Can they charge you tax on a tax ?

Without seeing the full list or breakdown of the charges and just trying to work out out from your figures it like like the following

    Goods including shipping = 39
    + 23% VAT of €9 on that.

Then they change you a customs and probably ups handling fees which comes to 14.50 then there is VAT 23% sure on the 14.50 charges as they haven't included it in the first calculation. This is the €3.34.

So looks like they haven't changed you tax on tax but they just haven't made it very clear what they are doing if that's the way they presented the figures.
