Ah. Yeah theyre the Citroen/Peugeot engine. My parents one had the same complaint. Difficulty reving at higher engine speeds and smells of fumes in the cabin. Very rarely the engine light would come on too. The cause of the fumes was a leaking copper injector seal. Exhaust gasses were escaping (along with an assload of carbon which required hours of cleaning) replacement was a pita... And it only solved the fumes. The power problem, on diagnosis by a separate Citroen garage, was caused by the airflow meter which on replacement solved it.

Tldr; open the bonnet and if you hear a "tick tick tick" in rhythm with the engine, thats the fume problem.
As regards the power.... I dont want to come across as a bit of a **** but those engines are widely accepted as being among the absolute worst to work on in terms of just about everything, mechanical, electronic or otherwise. A dealer or high level indie diagnosic check will be required. This is my experience on the symptoms youve listed but with the engine in mind it might well be something else.

Thanks a mill for the response no lights at all on in the dash, so these problems are simple enough to fix? Costly? I thought it was a ford engine? Ford Mazda and Volvo have this engine??

So do Citroen, Peugeot, BMW (Mini) and another make I cant think of :( The frenchies made em, everyone else bought them. Credit where its due they were by far the most powerful engine with that level of fuel efficiency.

If its that, then itll likely be expensive. The parts for the injector seal are cheap (under 15 quid but the time required to change them is woeful.. (2 and a half hours thereabouts). The airflow meter if its gone will take less than ten minutes to change but would cost about 250 to buy. We got a 2nd hand one off a scrapper for 40quid :o
Tbh, an exact cost is hard to work out. I did it for free:D

If its the engine I'm thinking of (few drinks on board) the seals around the top of the MAF on those can fail leading to corrosion on the circuit board.
On diagnosis of failed MAF pry off the cover and clean the resistors and circuit board. PC world will provide the cleaning products needed.

Also works with a few jap cars as well.
