BTEA - 21 in September

Heya, i'm out of college for this year due to financial reasons, and am currently on the Jobseeker, avidly looking for work. I'm 20, fully dependant on my father and entitled to the grant. However my dad has recently applied for a job opportunity that showed up (he's currently on one parent family payment) and that would mean i'd lose the right to the grant. I meet all the criteria to be entitled to BTEA, I will be 21 this year however I turn 21 in September, a week after most courses start so will this rule me out from recieving it? I have asked my local Social Welfare Department and they have not given me a clear answer.

The age of 21 eligibility requirement is that you be at least 21 immediately prior to the start of the specific course you want.

Oh dear. So they wont make an exception even if i'm just a few days off? Or whatr about if I only register after my birthday (22 Sept)?

There is a possibility they would consider a late BTEA application but only if there was 'a good reason' for it being late. Waiting to be eligible won't be seen as a good reason and your college will have to supply a letter to them giving start date of the course. Also if you follow that plan, by the time your BTEA application is processed, you would have started your course and all the cost involved and then risk not getting BTEA and having to chose between losing your Jobseekers payment or your college place and course.
