Why would they do deals for OAP's? I can be sure if if my father was getting a deal from the isp then i would certanly be looking for one too

AFAIK Digiweb are offering a discount to OAP's if they move to them, their MD announced this after the last budget dropped the €9.50 telephone allowance....Though as far as I can remember the MD made a statement to the media that this discount would apply to ALL customers who previously had the telephone allowance, though when I lasted looked at their website it only seemed to apply to OAP's...

thanks for the info admcfad i will give them a bell later to see what they have to say :) but as far as STEINBERG in case you didn't know the OAP's telephone allowance was cut in the budget and as a result a lot of OAP's have had to cut there phone line off due to this, i presume by your comment that your father is not retired or is on a healthy pension and dose not worry about money in this economy and for this reason i asked the question,

ps, the question is only stupid if you know the answer already,

There is no such thing as a stupid question.

However it costs exactly the same to deliver telecommunication services to every adult, elderly or not. So why would any company offer a discount for OAP's unless it was a subsidy from the government?

The old free line rental allowance from the government distorted the market terribly. We had the highest line rental in the world because Eircom knew they could get away with charging extortionate line rental as the government was paying for over 25% of peoples (OAP's) lines anyway.

Because of this almost everyone was paying almost twice as much as the average European line rental.

it seem a little bit stupid on the governments side to stop this as would they still not be getting revenue from the OAPs, they were giving free line rental and i know it still has to be subsidized but on the flip side of that they would pull in 23% of the bill, has it brought the line rental rates down for other yet?? i dont know, if you do the maths its a couple of quid in the diff, any way thanks for the info saves the heart ache of him ringing and being refused

Why was it stupid for the government to stop this?

It was costing the government 10's of millions a year to basically subsidise a private company!

and what im trying to say is that the government are making 23% back on the rest of your bill so knock allowance off and the rest is taxable so VAT on at €45 bill is about €10.50 compared to the €9.50 allowance, i could be a plonker in all this but were am i going wrong ??
