UPC issues right now March 2014

Seeing as UPC couldn't be bothered to inform us of basic important things...

I reported a routing problem and as usual got absolutely nowhere with the frontline "support" people, you know the drill turn off your modem, reboot your PC blah blah, so being that sort of person I rang one of the NOC guys I know...

He told me that they are currently in the process of upgrading to IPV6 and lots of bits and pieces have gone wrong especially with routing (which is normal enough on an upgrade of this nature) and they are getting around to fixing the issues once the network is migrated...He gave me an estimate but couldn't/wouldn't swear to it (again normal enough) so I won't repeat it as that wouldn't be fair. (This is all top secret which imo is utter boll*x)

C'mon UPC keep us informed, it's just common courtesy, we don't bite!

That would match the issues I'm having with international traffic. Cheers.

Yes problems for me too. I'm in the South Dublin area. Upload speed is normal, download almost none existent. Clicking on reply to post this took 5 mins.
Speedtests haven't been starting for a few hours now but a d/l speed at around half a mb was the best I could get. Poor old modem has been hard rebooted a dozen times today and always the same result. Thanks for posting Bealtine and co, at least I know its not a fault at my end. Fingers crossed.

Thats separate to this. Reboot your modem it'll jump back up in speed for a while. See my really long thread for more.

    Thanks for reply ED E.
I couldn't find the thread you mentioned but I'll have a go at
resetting the modem again. On other occasions that I have had this
same prob (d/l bad, u/l fine) a modem reset or two would fix it.
But today it doesn't want to come back after 12 or 14 hard resets.

A link to the thread would be appreciated.

    Thanks.

    Thats the behaviour

And this is the thread. Not all may be relevant but I saw those downstream crashes for a long while.

Would this explain my packet loss ?

Could be...but I'd have to say that these online tests can be very inaccurate anyway so I wouldn't rely on them as the real story.

Drop to a cmd window(on windows) and ping from there...

I have and every third or fourth test is a way off.Is there a way to run a longer ping test on cmd or a way to realtime packet monitor ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,061 ✭✭✭damagegt

It seems to have stopped now of course !

    ping -t target
(where target can be an IP or a name like say google.ie)
will run a continuous ping test
    Ctrl-C to stop

Also there are apps like pingplotter (freeware version) and a 100 others like it out there

Fking sick of this now...am having to reset the modem during the day also when before it was only evening.....and I've only recently signed up to a new 12 month contract to get a cheaper package

WTF are they doing? If you're going to upgrade the network great, just let people know. And it's probably not the best idea to up your prices, just when the service is about to deteriorate. I pay more now, because I was upgraded involuntarily to 120mpbs, and this is what I get.

Surely it would have been better to just have some planned downtime, that way people would be affected for maybe a few days(maybe I'm being optimistic) instead of a few months. My problems started back in mid February.

Went down again for a few minutes there.
Some funky packet loss to international locations, then a small bit of packet loss within Ireland. All the while a Skype call to a friend in Cork remained up. ;)

Pingdom.com is a useful way to monitor the connection, it's worth a look. I have a paid account with them but the free version will give you one Check which should suffice for most.

Seems like national UPC issues tonight. Loads complaining.

Three times tonight by connection has just gone dead. Lease stays up, modem is alive but 100% loss on the wan interface.

yea im having major routing probs here too.

Some sites loading without issue and lots of others just timing out....

Come on UPC get the finger out...

Okay - thanks, guys. It's good to know it's not just me. Same problems here in D14 and dammit! I would need the net tonight of all nights. Have a tonne of stuff to get ready by morning.

I had BBC Radio iPlayer running in the background and it kept timing out. Then nothing would work so I'd do a hard reset. It works for a while and them. Zip. Nothing.

I was dreading having to ring them in the morning and know I'd get the stock Q&A with the inevitable technician call out, only to find that nothing is wrong.

Edit: Flying along now for some reason.
