Should I quit?

TL;DR - I hate this job, i think i might quit and focus on my studies. (I realise its short sighted to do)

    So here's my situation.

'Working' in the marketing department for a large enough company, 100-150 people. I emphasize working, because i have no work to do. My actual role in the company isn't really marketing related, it's more design focused, but any time i try to do something design related i encounter 'turf protection', So i'm on the marketing team, but can't really contribute in any way, so i just wait for the small amount of work I get every week or two.

So i get paid minimum wage €8.65 40 hours per week but don't get paid for lunch, so i do a 45 hour week, I started in the company on a 3 month unpaid internship and have been here 10 months now.

I'm also in my final year of a part-time degree in the evenings, 12 hours of classes a week. So wed-thursday i work from 8am until 5pm, then college from 6pm until 10pm.

So i'm considering quitting, signing on the dole and availing of some jobs initiative, or start your own business fund, which I won't get while working here.

No, don't quit. Among other things, you won't qualify for the dole for nine weeks. And you won't get a reference.

Instead, use your work hours to do things relevant to your study. With the amount of research time available to you, you should be getting A's.

He said quit, not take a poo on his manager's desk.

Unfortunately the office isn't really study friendly, so much noise and people walking around. But i get your point, I've been on the job hunt for 2 months now, i've gotten one interview :(

Just on the above..it's nine weeks, not months, you'll have to wait for SW after quitting.

So your course finishes in May?

Hang in there! Maybe talk to someone in the dept you get on with and see if that have work for you, or can advise you on a course of action.

You need to prove yourself and that takes patience, and is about doing simple things well - consistently.

Is the course related to your job? If so, make sure your boss knows you're close to finishing.

Any little project you could do off your own bat, to hand to the boss? New design for a product, web-page, brochure, packaging or logo? (Not sure if this is your area, but if not think of sth that is!)

As the wise Mrs O says above, if you leave, it looks bad. You won't get the dole straight away, and you'd need to be unemployed for 12 months to avail of any scheme or initiative.

You have a job - they're rare enough still - I'd be very slow to waste that.

You need experience to get more interviews - stay put. Finish your course, get your best grade. Make yourself useful to a senior colleague in work - they may appreciate the offer.

It's a games company, I've been working on a few projects over the past couple of months along with my supervisor/manager, but every project we've worked on has been shot down by upper management. So my supervisor/manager is jobseeking at the moment too, so it's rather depressing.

As for the other members in the department, their roles are so specialised in SEO, PR, Google Accounts/analytics that I just don't have the skills to be involved with, its very IT centred.

My degree is in General Business, which touched on marketing a bit, but nothing compared to the level of specialisation they're doing. So, i'm left here with no direction to go within the department, and nobody I've talked to wants anyone to do stuff. My helpful ideas and insights have been greeted with apathy and sometimes hostility in the past.

People don't get paid for lunch as standard.

I actually see your point about the initiatives for setting your own company up. The problem is you have to be out of work a year. The other issue is what business do you think you can set-up that will give you an income.

So do you plan to be unemployed for a year rather than earning the money to set-up your own business? The money also isn't enough to set-up a business so where are you going to get the rest?

Stay in the job and apply for other jobs.

Could you ask for some training so you'll have more to offer?

Buy headphones and study at work. Keep extensive notes on the ideas that were shot down. That's your portfolio, shot or not. Gather any other materials you can to flesh out your cv. Sign up for every project going. Even though it seems like crap right now you can look really good approaching your next employer. Team player blah blah.

    Dont quit.

Apart from everything else SW are sending letters out to employers to check to see if the applicant left a job, & whether or not there was still a job there when you left of another internal job you could have applied for. If the company answers truthfully you won't be eligible for the dole.

Either way you have a regular job in a dark recession & particularly in a design capacity this will sound great to a new employer. If you must try for other jobs & work on your portfolio or business skills. If your final exams are coming up you may appreciate a little slack to focus your theory on. If your degree is practical & you are in design perhaps see if there might be another dept you could be seconded to on a project basis - might be worth a try. If you say theyre not using you they might just cut their costs & get rid of you . Yih don't want to be on a job bridge scheme working for free & doing rubbish envelope stuffing or menial office tasks - yiu could end up there if you leave / govt policy for inexperienced & college leavers - that would be a lot worse. Check out the jobbridgescam thread. ...

i can relate to the frustration you must be feeling in a job but with no productive work to do.

are you in a position where you could speak about this to the person in charge?

Yes, but I think i'll just coast through until my exams are done while still applying for other positions.
