Lads could anybody clear this up for me. I always thought you can claim tax back for the last few years whether your still working or not. My uncle was told by a friend you can only claim taxback after you finish with the place you were working. Could anybody clear this up for me. He is working their 10+ years and has never applied for taxback.

You can apply for tax back for the last 4 years, if you are working or not.

Has he claimed all tax credits entitled to?

    Any medical expenses?

A good start is to ring revenue and ask for a P21 Balancing statement for the last four years.

He has never claimed anything he never knew you could until i said it to him. The tax office close at 1 so he couldn't go to the office because of work. I presume the best way is to ring them in the morning to send out a pin to do it online.

You can look for a review at anytime however unless you are claiming additional tax reliefs or credits there shouldn't be any refund due if your circumstances did not change in period you looking at. Refunds can also happen due to being incorrectly taxed on account of multiple employments in during a period.

For future reference the answers are all on the Revenue website.

It would be very strange that he'd be working that long without claiming basic tax credits.

Broadly, and I do mean broadly, if there is nothing glaringly different about him as compared to your average Joe Soap, I'm sure his tax would be about right and probably due zilch.

Maybe i am wrong. I thought once you are working and paying tax you can get a certain amount of taxback on what you paid.

You can get a certain amount of relief on expenses paid eg tuition fees or health expenses. You can also get tax back if you paid too much in the first place. However if you've paid the correct tax and haven't had any of those qualifying expenses you wouldn't get anything back.

First thing to do is register for PAYE anytime online. Once he has access to that he can go back as far as 2010 and claim for any expenses he hasn't claimed for and request a p21 balancing statement which will tell him whether he's entitled to a refund. Something to keep in note is that he could also end up owing them more if his taxes were underpaid
