Haldex oil change

    Hello all.

    I'm dropping down to our local Skoda dealership today to change the oil in the Haldex unit (4th generation) on our Yeti.

    Reading online it looks a relatively quick task for a full dealer, just draining & refilling...
    The UK dealers charge around £75 as the oil itself is pricey.

    In an email, they said its going to take a few hours.

    Are they trying one on?
    I don't want a bill for 2hrs+ of labour if the job only takes 30 mins.

    Any advise welcome!

    While the job may only take an hour it would be normal for them to have your car for a few hours,it allows them to be a bit flexible with their jobs for that day,in case somebody is late or they get caught short on parts etc

    You really should have gotten a price beforehand to allay any fears you have tbh :)

    I argued that 1hr labour cost was sufficient if also covering enough time for a regular oil change.

    So it was €160 incl vat for the haldex oil change, engine oil change & they also cleaned the car which was nice of them.

    hey

    so I just did this on my superb 4x4 (its pretty much the same system).

    car up on lift, remove fill plug (m10 hex head iirc), then remove drain plug. wait a few minutes till its all out (fill quantity is approx. 925ml so you wont get that much out of it but close enough).

    you get a one liter bottle of haldex fluid for around 25 notes from skoda (you cant get it third party).

    you will need a vas6291 filler tool, or some form of pump or giant syringe thing - I have a gearbox oil transfer pump that does the same thing.

    replace drain plug, connect tool to filler plug and fill away.

    fill it till it spills (so wait until north of 900ml has gone in, remove the filler tool, and let it drain from the filler plug until it stops)

    then screw back in the drain plug and you are done. repeat every 40k miles.

    so its pretty straightforward.

    if you got an oil change as well, then with the cost of the oil & filter, and the haldex oil change, you got a very very good deal imho!

    last time I checked the service kit (oil) for my car was around 90 notes from skoda, for the oil, a sump plug, filter, washers etc. so you got a very good deal!

    So it was €160 incl vat for the haldex oil change, engine oil change & they also cleaned the car which was nice of them.

    All of that would have taken longer than an hour. 2 hours was reasonable in my mind. The car was occupying a member of staff for that entire time.

    You'd have to be out of your mind to pay that for a service kit. I get 5L 507 spec LL oil and filter and sump plug for €52 all in from my local factors.

    Really? I've never heard of Auto Factors stocking sump plugs. What brand oil is it? The cheapest I could get oil for when I was driving a diesel was Fortec €52 the filter was €10,no chance of getting a sump plug outside the dealers door.

    My point was that the posters weren't comparing like with like. The service kit for €90 contained Oil,Filter,washers and a new sump plug. The Auto factor price was for just oil and filter. I don't think I ever needed to change a sump plug.

    No they won't, they suck the oil out through the dipstick hole using a vacuum pump:cool::cool:. No chance of the dumbest lad in the place stripping the sump threads that way:):) Simply clever eh?

    Exactly, the sump plug will never come off a car in most main dealers. For good reason IMO

    True. Hard to read someone comparing main dealer service prices to buying oil in a factors and doing it yourself though. It's like comparing waffles to wattles.

    @techprisoner - i stand corrected, but... thats a 250ml cartridge so you would need 4 of them for the yeti/superb., so 3.7 x the price of OEM

    also, there are several haldex fluids for the different systems, and its hard to tell what that one is, and you cannot mix the different types.

    Where?? They only stock Mobil (€88) or Triple R (€61). They don't sell Twix bars for 0.50c either:rolleyes::rolleyes:

    if your haldex is like the Freelander or xc90 make sure the filter is changed as well as oil!!

    so there are two main types of haldex box - type 2 (older, had a filter to change) and type 4 (newer, no filter).

    re: haldex for 4 wheel drive - yep - haldex make the system that a good few manufacturers use for the 4x4s - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Haldex_Traction

    Yeh, needed to check that, thought my service history book said haldex coupling oil change completed, its ticked not done, not 4x4.

    Add an oil filter for about €6 and it only comes to €42. Why anyone would pay 90 quid at a dealer is beyond me.

    Fortec is a good oil according to the vw forums. The jury's still out on triple R though. Strange gsf don't have total lubricants on their website. Very unusual considering the bulk of their irish business would be web based. Believe it or not but the cheapest oil &filter I ever got was from my local vw dealer....before the recession swallowed him up...

    Not in the Skoda main dealer I worked in. New sump plug shoved in the box with each filter. Never saw the extractor being used to change oil once. It was taken out to drain fuel tanks and the like.

    I've never ever seen a sump plug shoved in the oil filter box. Why in the name of God would you need to replace the sump plug at every oil change? Any VW/Skoda mechanic I've spoken to have told me that Skoda in particular recommend using an oil extractor because of the aluminium sump. After a spate of sump threads winding themselves out with the steel plug on Passat's in particular, VW mechanics prefer the extractor method too. As do I.
    Saw enough of it with the old type Mini's to do me a lifetime...(horrible little cheapskate car)

    Is 507 00 backwards compatible with 506 00 or 505 00?
    or required for non DPF diesel engines?
    Ive also seen 5W 40 and 10W 40 diesel multigrades being shown as the suitable oil.

    As for the Skoda sump nut/plugs with the washer, do motor factors stocks them? in Dublin area? south of the Liffey

    I think I've figured out the sequence of events. Car is getting serviced by independent who reuses sump plug. After a few oil changes the plug starts to drip as the now flattened sealing washer can no longer provide a seal. The plug gets tightened more and more to stop the dripping. Then the fateful day arrives when someone tries to open the now severely over tightened sump plug and out comes the sump threads with the plug..... Nightmare!!
