As well as I can see this website has been discontinued (indeed Google Shopping generally is not being promoted much at all by Google -although I think there is an android (=mobile?) version of it now )

Is there anything comparable that allows me to search for products worldwide as well as in Ireland?

I find the ebay thing a bit messy as the auctions seem to be mixed up with the "buy now" section. (although I have used it once ).

I used to browse the Google Shopping for "research" purposes more than as a serious buyer. Is there anything like it now or have things moved on?

I find ebay handy for researching prices. You can separate buy it now from auctions just below the search bar. And you can see how much things have sold for in the past.
You could also try amazon, but I find prices to be odd there sometimes.
Google will also throw up plenty of price compare websites for you, but I've never used any as I'm sure most have an agenda.
