hi, this has probably been asked dozens times but i cant find a proper answer. i recently passed my theory test and im thinking of buying a car, i am gonna buy a mg zr or sumting simular, 1.2 litre. if i register the car in my dads name and drive it under him does anybody know roughly the cost of the insurance or what i have to do to get a good saving,

the other option is to drive my mothers car which he is a named driver on too, thats a 1 litre, how much would that be?

Youre basically asking how long is a piece of string. You need to ring around and get some quotes from various insurers and brokers and see what kind of figures you are being quoted. It will be different for everyone.

Best way to get a good saving is to pass your test! Youre going to pay through the nose while you dont have a license.

you wont save a lot because the Ins Comps are wise to such ideas. Ring around for the best quote and get the test done first would be the best plan as stated.

Twice as long as half it's length :pac:

    (Sorry I couldn't resist) :o

OP that's fronting. Save up and get a policy when you've passed your test

Its not fronting if you tell them of your intentions. Of course, if you tell them of your intentions then you may as well get your own policy!

It seems either way that some insurers will just price the policy accoding to the highest risk regardless, especially if your father already has a car, so it might not make much of a difference to the price one way or another.

Any insurer will see straight through that plan and rate the risk on what the percieve to be the most rateable driver.

Also proposal forms ask who will be the main user of the vehicle and if the proposer has another vehicle in their own name.

Your best bet would to be named on your mothers policy for a year or two, pass your test and then buy your own car.

A number of insurers recently started adding wordings about unaccompanied drivers with learner permits or provisional licences to their policies so there's also that.

Save your pennies for another year anyway!
