Road ID wrist-band - Emergency Contact

I have 3 Road ID wrist-bands all engraved with my vitals in event I am in an accident and un-conscious when found.
Anywhoo, all 3 I have have my Late Loving Dad as my Emergency Contact (he was laid to Rest on day before Christmas Eve just gone & I've not done much cycling since) - his name and mobile number are engraved on all - as he always was my Emergency Contact and always listed by me on all Sportive forms as point-of-contact also.

Just wondering who you guys have listed as yours? Those listed - can they drive? (as I'd imagine that'd be important in getting to you faster if needs be). Parent / Partner / Friends / other Relative. I am between minds at the mo as to who to put down and obviously permission will be required.

I signed up for a Sportive recently and it hit me! Then last-week on a spin I put on my wrist-band without thinking (just natural for me as kept will all other vitals I take with me cycling) and only en route it hit me, my Late Loving Dads details are engraved on it!

~> Road ID wrist-band: I will be ordering new but, just not sure who to list as Emergency Contact now :o

    Hope someone can assist,
    kerry4sam

I think it should be your next of kin. Your husband, wife, partner or parent. Just so that they won't be worrying about you if you don't show up when you're meant to. Or extremely unlikely worst case scenario, to make it easier to identify you. If you don't have anybody who would be immediately freaking out if you don't come back then I don't see any point in one.

Whoever it is isn't going to be coming to save you, that's the ambulance's job. So I don't think it matters if they can drive or any other factors.

    Hi K4S...!
As said above it would be your next of kin, or someone close. I have this one

    http://www.theidbandco.com/12mm-Black-Plated-Unisex-Stainless-Steel-Engraveable-Medical-ID-Bracelet-24108

I'm a Type 1 Diabetic and I have this fact and my blood group along with no allergies and then her indoors name and number.

I also make a point of chatting to the ambulance crew and tell them the story give my race no and that I have a Glucopen in my jersey - Just in case... But that would be an extreme case.

They are a great job and well worth it as it can save valuable time !

I don't have a bracelet but the wallpaper on the lock screen on my phone has my wife's name and a close friend that's also a fellow club member.

I don't have a bracelet but the wallpaper on the lock screen on my phone...

ICE was a good idea before phones became computers that needed to be protected/secured.

Since 2012, Android phones (v4.0+) can add emergency contacts to the Emergency Call screen that is always available. Just add your spouse/doctor/etc to the "ICE - emergency contacts" group and then they can be added to one of the 4 dialler spots. It's then easy to look up, or dial directly, the person.

Doesn't help if your phone is broken in a crash

Everything has it's fail points. Phone doesn't help if it's broken in the crash. Neck chains don't help if you're decapitated in the crash and they can't find it etc...

Yes, and if there is a small nuclear explosion at the crash site that vapourises you entirely, there will be no remains to identify.
Some things are more likely than others.

Likelyhood of phone screen being smashed in a crash/accident are kinda high,

Likelyhood of a dog tag or road id wrist band being smashed beyond readability are much much lower,

Thanks to kerry4sam for this thread-I don't have a bracelet and had really forgotten about the idea until I read this. Where can you get one? Also, does anyone put medical info on theirs, like blood type, allergies etc? Would some sort of USB device be a good idea, maybe some basic bio data for the emergency services? I'm off to China (with the bike) on Monday (assuming I survive Balbriggan race weekend intact…) and this bracelet thing came up last year after a guy was killed in an accident there. We all said then that we'd get bracelets and of course the whole idea just sort of faded away.

True but I'm saying everything has it's fail point. Something is better than nothing. I just won't wear a ride id bracelet as it's not euro and disrupts the tan line sharpness.

Christ!! Decapitation while out cycling....that sounds a tad severe....usually it's skinned knees & elbows, broken collar bone/wrist etc....loosing one's head is certainly a bad accident but won't require anyone to come to your aid!!

Been meaning to order a Road ID for years finally did just now. Usually have ID in my saddle bag but I never carry any running.

They give a link that gives $10 credit to my account every one that buys one using it.

If any one wants it I'll PM them the link and I'll donate the credit I recieve to one of the charities they list.

In the event I'm ever decapitated I reckon the last people I'd want at the scene would be my next of kin. Not that I'd have much say in the matter I suppose....

No, I didn't get it in Drogheda. Mine is a roadid.com one.

Must get me one of these. The amount of falls I have. I was confused after my most recent crash and for a while couldn't remember my husbands phone number, the bracelet would have been handy.

I was in a rather "distressed" state when the family came to visit me after my recent racing crash - in fact the youngest kid did not take it very well. Not even sure how they got in touch with the family - used to wear a wrist ID but haven't done so in recent times - probably should again. Apparently I garbled a mixture of numbers for the wife to hospital staff. The one thing they could go on though was possibly the 'phone where I highlight the wife's number with "ICE" - In Case of Emergency. Keep the phone in the back pocket, meaning it tends to survive when my head gets smashed up. If the phone is damaged there's probably a bit less chance of concussion ....

Scarey scenarios! They'd probably ring Lidl if they found me in a heap.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,469 ✭✭✭TheBlaaMan

I use a SportsTagID for the past few years and never go out without it. It has become as second-nature to put it on as would a seat-belt in a car. I doubt that the ICE entry in my phone is much good.....the device self-locks after 60 seconds of inactivity and the E/R guys are unlikely to figure out my PIN code if I'm not responsive.........

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,488 ✭✭✭Ryath

You can on most display some text on the lock screen. Just have my wife phone number and ICE displayed.
Buffalo in another thread said since android 4.2 you can add a number of contacts to to the emergency dialer on the lock screen it doesn't seem to be an option though for my xperia Z. Might be just Samsung android phones.

I wouldn't depend just on this, no guarantee the doctors/staff would be aware of this

Main reason I'm getting the the road id. Beyond severing a limb should stay attached! I'd imagine guards/ paramedics would often check phones and are used to looking for ICE details. Fair chance of phone getting smashed in a bike accident though.

So I got my Road ID but now iam a wondering where to keep it so I remember to wear it!!

At the moment I am just wearing it all the time.

    What do other people do?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,488 ✭✭✭Ryath

I forgot to put it on myself first two rides after getting it. Have it left around nose of saddle at the minute. Could stap to your helmet or stick it in your cycling shoes.

yeah the helmet is a good idea, but I am now thinking I should be wearing it on runs as well.......

I can forsee my dog having it more often than I do!!

I use mine for running so I leave it with my garmin so I always remember it, have it about two years now and i'm so used to wearing it I even end up putting it on during races without a second thought.

For cycling, I guess least it with your helmet or shoes and that way after awhile you'll be used to putting it on.

Don't run a lot but personally I will think of it going running. Cycling you have a lot more things to think of to get ready and I'm usually rushing to get to club spin or race. Less distracted going running just out the door for a 30 minute jog. I have phone and ID in saddle bag when cycling never carry anything running.

I'm afraid my daughters might borrow it as I have their names on the add on badge!
