Fuel Efficiency for Motorway 25 Mile drive

    Hi,
    I do 25 miles on a motorway to work every day. (So 50 miles there and back).
    Need to get a car that is fuel efficient and family friendly (estate). I was thinking with:

    * Ford Focus estate
    * Kia ceed estate
    * Hyundai i30
    * Vauxhall Astra

    Budget is about 11K. So hoping to get a 2009+ for one of the above.

    One thing that really confuses me thou is the fuel efficiency. They all claim to be efficient and have different injection types. I read the diesel / petrol thread and that confused me as well.

    My main question would be for the type of driving I am doing (25 miles on a motorway, 10 times a week) what type of engine should I be getting?

    Thanks.

    All post 08 cheap tax band diesels would have a common rail injection system a dual mass flywheel and a diesel particulate filter. Not the most reliable things ever attached to a diesel engine :cool:.

    Various manufacturers have different names for their common rail diesel system. TDI, TDCI, CTDI etc.

    As for mpg, despite manufacturers claims, with your type of driving they will all do about 55 running well so I would be more worried about reliability and buying a car you actually like to drive. I worked it out before that the difference between 40 and 50 mpg is only 500 euro every 10k miles. The difference between 50 and 60 is even less. Check out fuelly.com for more real world mpg figures.

    If it were me I'd buy a 2004 1.9 tdi audi a4/a6 avant(55mpg) with everything, leather seats etc. and leave the other 6/7k euro in the bank.
