    Hi

I have to renew my learning permit. 1st time renewal.

Can I go to any NDLS center to renew ?

Is the following items all i need to bring with me ?

    1. Passport
    2. P60
    3. This Application form http://www.ndls.ie/images/Documents/LearnerPermits/D201_Learner_Permit_app_form.pdf
    4. Current Learners permit

    No medical problems.

    Thanks.

Edit: How long will it take to process my application ?

You can use any NDLS centre you like.

No need for your passport, but yes you will need something with your PPSN on it.

You're probably looking at a 2-3 week turnaround time.

Yep, no need to bring your passport, but you do have to have something with your PPSN on it. Here are the examples listed on the NDLS website:

    - Public Services Card/Social Services Card
    - Correspondence from Revenue/Department of Social Protection showing PPSN
    - P21/Tax Assessment/ Notice of Tax credits
    - Receipt of Social Welfare Paymteent
    - Medical Card / Drug Payment Scheme (DPS) Card
    - Payslip or P60/P45

do you have a certain amount of time in which you can renew your permit or does it have to be almost immediately after it expires? im not driving at the minute and want to wait as long as possible to renew until I can afford to start driving

Once it has expired, it has expired. There is no grace period or wiggle room that still lets you drive if it has expired.

If you let it expire more than five years, then you have to go back to the very beginning and start the process off all over again as if you never had a learner permit at all ...theory test, eye exam, 12 EDT lessons...the whole hog.

If all you want to do is wait until you can afford lessons before you renew it, yes you can do that. You just can't do any driving at all until you have renewed it. Depending on where you apply for your renewal, there are delays of 2 weeks to 2 months for people to get their new license in the post. So when you decide you are ready to start driving, plan for a possible delay there.
