Need a new saloon car for the baby seat:D
looking along the lines of 06-08 520 / 525 /530d but looking for opinions
like the look of some of the merc available like the c class but know nothing about them, mayby even audi a6 but not really a audi lover
have 10 - 12k to spend mayby more if something caught my eye
i know theres some great motors in that price category now
if i could get something on new tax system thatd be better

    any opinions?

Have a 05 3.0 TDI Quattro A6 and it's a fantastic machine. Mine is very highly specced though which (from my own experience when I was looking) is pretty hard to get.
An A8 would be better again and there's a few of them about for that sort of money.

I'm sure the BMW heads will be along shortly but regardless of what's under the bonnet, I don't rate the E60 5 series at all (I've now driven several of them) and certainly wouldn't see the cabin/iDrive system as anywhere near as nice or functional as mine (sorry guys - I just don't feel the love! :p). The F10 however may be a different story but likely outside the price range you've given.

Merc is another idea but if you want a luxury cruiser you should be looking at E-classes rather than C's (they're tiny - had one of those for a week too) .. unless it was a CLS :)

Ony downside with that budget is if you want big + luxury, you'll be looking at CC cars which means ridiculous motor tax rates (mine is €422 a quarter for example), but it's up to you if the comfort, toys and power are worth it :) Also I'd be sticking to auto versions in this segment. Much better!

Cheap to tax versions of these cars cost more to buy so you will either need to up your budget or consider something on the older tax system, the more they cost to tax the cheaper they tend to buy.

BTW I would not touch a 520d from late 2007 onwards given their reputation with timing chain issues.

id only buy the older engine 520, not really mad for them unless its the 177bhp model, even at that there not very powerfull, but for 2.0 there good enough, better tax compared to 530 so might be ok, all depends on car really

The older engine (M47) was 163bhp. The 177bhp (N47) is the one with the potential ticking timing chain bomb.

A 06 525d would be in budget if you are happy to pay the almost €1k tax per year. Nicer engine than the 520d either way.

Why would you buy a diesel if its not going to be driven that much? Higher initial purchase, usually higher mileage and far more complexity than most petrols.

530i (costs the same to tax as 530d - 750eur under emissions based system):

i would agree on the 525 yep best of both worlds
    520 came in 150 / 163 / 177 do they not?
i sell alot of flywheels for them

much easier to sell on than high engine petrol cars
plus it will be used on long drives when it is used, would prefer diesel

why do people keep posting cars for sale in uk, most of these cars are cheaper here if you look in right places? a 530i petrol would be very hard sold and not very desirable to most people weather that be right or wrong

Personally, I'd go for either W221 s-class or a LS430. I have the latter on lpg and it's a phenomenal car. If you want proper luxury you've got to go for a flagship model, the mid range is quite a step down.

I take your point on resale but any car, petrol or diesel, which is 'high tax' / has a larger engine car is going to depreciate heavily.

My Da had a 2.0 TDi A6 from new, serviced to schedule, that blew a dual mass flywheel, two turbos, an oil pump and eventually an ECU, at which point he sold it to the mechanic. A 530i would have been a cheaper car to own over its lifecycle. Actually the ED petrol BMW engines are pretty efficient, especially on long trips.

That car is up north by the way.

730d? This one has low enough mileage and is the facelift model. If you can accept higher miles you can up the years.

    Honda Accord?

Might not have the "badge" the German cars do but it's a fine car.

Neighbour picked up an extremely high spec '08 535d last year for €14k so I'd say you're in the ballpark there. €750 in motor tax and 340BHP after remap :D

I'd nearly consider diesel myself with those figures :D

its possible to buy 06-07 535d for well under 10k
very hard sold compared to 520d or even 530d
    serious car for money

08 on 535d on new tax bracket is looking best option for me
fast / comfy family car with bags of power

Out of curiousity whats the fuel consumption on them like? I can't imagine they would be the most economical.

I know up to 07, but it's hard to find an 08 one that's well priced thanks to the tax attitude.
Don't know why they're less popular than a 530d to be honest.

id say its just the irish attitude to big engine cars
dont see what diff 530 or 535 make
both are huge tax so might aswell get 535d :D

There was a huge difference in price between a 530d and 535d at the time afaik.
