    hi

Can anyone tell me the process for importing a Toyota Hilux double cab, my issue is with getting it registered as commercial i am not registered for vat so will this mean it will be imported as private thus leaving me with huge tax.

I am importing the jeep from the UK to EIRE.

i m looking for the 2.5 double cab invincible in black.

    thanks

You're issue isn't with the import VRT which I think will be 13.3% no matter what the final use, but once you've got it here and try to register it to you as a commercial.

Unless you have a VAT no, herd no or other proof of business use plus can prove you have employees that need the extra seats you'll end up with passenger motor tax at over €1000 a year.

Hi, I did it about 6 years ago. Then all you needed was a form signed by the local garda and a weigh bridge cert. The local tax office helpfully talked about removing the seats and permanently cutting off the seat belt anchors. Things got a little tense. I don't think they knew what a hilux was. Eventually a supervisor took a look and all was fine.

Though when I go to tax it these days my tax office has a notice up saying - you must produce a revenue tax assessment for that trade - but I've never been asked for one so ....

The problem is that the Hilux is new to you, once it's registered you don't have to jump through hoops every year.

As to commercialising any vehicle, there's far more involved with an import than with an Irish vehicle that VRT has already been paid on. Anything post 2010 commercial import has to be factory built. You may also have to get it assessed by an "Approved Assessor" before the revenue will even look at it.

The revenue are getting tougher on this and if you want to run a "lifestyle" crewcab pickup you may have to pay for it the same as running any passenger 4x4. I'm in the same boat, I have a Defender Station wagon and pay over €1000pa for the pleasure of driving it.

It's a ridiculous way of taxing vehicles but we're stuck with it and so many taking the mickey in the past has tightened the rules such that there are far fewer trying now.
