Sky overcharge when account was closed

Just after a bit of advise here. My mother had an account with sky for a number of years now but didn't want to keep her account so closed it about a month ago. (Services all finished about 3 weeks ago). I opened up an account in my name.

The payment for my mothers sky was coming out of my bank account and I noticed today that we've been charged another month for her subscription. I then realised I didn't contact the bank to cancel the direct debit (stupid me!). I didn't know what to do so I rang our rep and told him what had happened. He was nice saying that shouldn't have happened and then said I'll be in head office on monday and I'll try to get at least half of it back for you. I was thinking Jesus it was E96 that was stopped.

I know I should have cancelled the direct debit but has anyone got any experience of this, is he right in saying they might not pay it back or only give give back half. While my mothers subscription has been cancelled we have taken up where she left off.

Is it just tough for me because I didn't cancel the DD with the bank??

Well, my understanding is that you pay Sky for a month in advance. In an ideal world, if your cancellation is at the end of your subscription, then you pay no more. But inevitably people cancel at different times of the month , so there is likely to be a balance due each way. As for Sky taking out a full extra moth, well thats not on. And the Sky rep you were talking to is an idiot. There is no way he should have offered half back, that is assuming you/your mother gave the required months notice to cancel.

If they wrongly took money for a closed account then you can get onto your bank first thing monday and have them recall the DD. The bank has to comply with you wishes and your money will be back i your account by COB that day.

They did the same to me a few years ago. Call them and they will refund it. Also ask them to refund the cost of the call.

Yeah things didn't seem right when he said I try to get at least half......... I was like I don't think so!!!! I know I should have cancelled. I'll ring them and get onto the bank on monday. I wanted to be 100% sure before I rang as I've had issues with sky in the past

    Thanks for your help!!!!

My dad was in the same situation. He cancelled his sky in December 2012. In December 2013 he noticed on his bank statement a DD for sky. It turned out he never cancelled his DD either and had been paying sky for a whole year. Now my dad is really layed back and wouldn't even ring sky until I hounded him for two months. He is due over €800 back but will not keep onto them and last time he rang was February. He's just been silly and throwing money away >:(

He doesn't check his bank balance except when the statement comes out once a year. I know and he wouldn't have a lot of extra cash so that 800 would be useful if he could pull his finger out !!

So just an update..... I called the bank and they said that they would recall the money for me and cancelled the DD, they said I should have it by wednesday.

The rep phoned me today and said that sky said that they would refund most of the money but they couldn't refund it all!!!! I was thinking that was bull!!! I've yet to have a good experience with Sky. They move the earth to get you as a customer and then once they have you, you're forgotton about!!!

Anyway at least the bank sorted me out!
