    Hi all,

I'm going to buy a car...have about 20k to spend on one. Can u please advise me on what are the best ones to buy for this kind of price.

The criteria of what I want is:
    1. Don't buy less than 2011
    2. Want diesel
    3. Saloon type

I'm thinking along the lines of Audi A4, Toyota avensis, Opel insignia but to be honest I don't know much bout cars except how to drive them!!

I'm based in dublin so please advise on best type of cars and the best dealers to buy from and best dealers to avoid!!

    Many thanks,your help is appreciated!!

First step is drive anything you like the look of, some models will click with you, some won't.

    Stuff worth driving for perspective

    Toyota Avensis
    Honda Accord
    Seat Exeo
    Hyundai i40
    Kia Optima
    Ford Mondeo
    VW Passat
    Citroen C5
    Skoda Superb
    Audi A4
    Bmw 316/318/320d

What leads you to your "criteria" OP? If I was going to spend 20k for a used car, it would need a chauffeur for the year as well, and I ain't short of a few bob. I'd either buy brand new and go the extra yard, or reduce my budget - you're right in the path of a main dealer looking to shift somthing and beat depreciation by letting you take the hit. Would 10k not be nicer? 10k buys a very nice, fresh diesel saloon these days.

well i got 08 avensis dsl, good reliable, dont like support for back in driver seat new type seems better, older 05s seemed to give endless ratchet trouble in seats as well as air conditioning problems but new pulley available for that now if you simply dont want to by pass with belt available. steering and suspension good as well, living in hilly country full of potholes ,just if tracking make sure that steering is centred properly though. vw passat or skoda would not be as good i recon for same car equivalent , no timing belt change, its worth around 5 mpg extra i recon, got good trade offer from toyota dealer kilkenny against 11d avensis last year,so i recon they hold value

I'd add the Volvo S60 to the list. D3 is a great engine.

I'm also going to be a little bias here and suggest looking at one of these too: :D

+1 to the S60. If its comfort and back support you need the S60 ticks both those boxes. It's also well built, spacious, reliable and very safe.

Thanks for suggestion will try out one ,not many around these parts, whats suspension system like, was going to try saab, tried out Quaski, real nice to drive, but a disaster to get size 12 foot in rear doors, room between door pillar and rear seat, dont like rear seat of 08 type passat either ,sitting under knee level ,after 80 mile journey as passenger in rear seat was barely able to walk, begged in-law driver to stop several times ,Naw your fine there! old arthur you know (arthritas)

not sure of what you mean , my wife and and daughter and son are bad rear seat passenger, get violently sick real easy,so i usually wind up on long journeys in back seat while one of them drives, that's my reason for checking out rear seat comfort and ease of access, long ago before the reclining seat there were other good reasons, can't remember what though:)

I have you now. I'd be looking at the Volvo then, they know how to make a good seat.
