The OCD Thread

Just a place where fellow OCD types can post their pet peeves.

I'll start: if one of my hands is wet (like if I was drying up or something) then I have to wet the other hand too or else I'll feel awkward and incomplete.

I have to round everything off to five or ten or some other similar multiple of 5 (for example, if I was out, I might drink 5 pints where 4 or 6 might suffice).

I also try to round everything off to three.

So you have 15 pints on the average night out? :)

I once had a postman with OCD and dyslexia.
He insisted all customs charges on international parcels were strictly COD.

I have to change the bedsheets on my bed, the magic trees in my cars, and the mats in my bathroom every Sunday. If I'm away I have to get somebody to come round and do it.

I suppose there's no chance of a quick hokey cokey while you're at it?

I used to do this but not anymore: When heading out I'd lock the door then get in the car but then I would have to go back to the door to check I actually locked it, and of course I always had.

To counter this, when I locking the door going forward I would say a particular word, or sing a line of a song, so when I was thinking back on it, I would remember I did actually lock the door because of this other action.

But then I'd be sitting in the car thinking "did I actually sing the line or did I imagine it?" and of course I'd have to get out and check the door was locked...

    ...and it always was.

I used to have OCD about blinking. The amount of time the person blinks means yes or no. Then I'd ask myself questions like will my mum die of cancer etc...

Why not get a small tape recorder and you can check to see if you sang the song or not. But don't forget to press the record button in the first place

    Idiot-checking... always with the idiot-checking

Not a bad thing I guess, I haven't lost anything in several years ;)

    ('cept my mind)

Even though I know I checked the back door is locked I still have to check it again before I am happy. Same can be said for light switches!

Before leaving the house I have to check that every socket is switched off even in rooms that I haven't been in since i last checked. I lock the door (2 locks) check it's locked by the handle and then stick the keys in again and turn just to make sure and then try handle again.

If I've used the iron I have to make sure to place it on the dining table after I've used it so that I can see it at a glance while I'm checking the room and know that I unplugged it as there are no sockets near the table.

I find it impossible to dry one wet hand also so have to wet the other to even things up.

Don't laugh, but I have a habit of shaking my willy vigorously after peeing before I put it back in my jocks.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,940 ✭✭✭✭Rothko

I have to take an even amount of steps when walking down a street or just simply walking from one place to another.

I always have to eat my food in an even amount of bites.

I always have to sit in the same place everytime when I'm somewhere like a bus, restaurant, pub or waiting room.

If I'm listening to music or watching a video and have to pause it, I have to pause it twice.

If I'm listening to music when traveling then I have to listen to an even amount of songs during the journey.

I get dressed from the bottom up, undressed from the top down.
    Both halves/top half naked, fine.
Top half clothed and bottom half naked has to be avoided.

    Feels wrong. Very wrong.

Books, DVDs, CDs etc have to be ordered properly.
I can't not finish a book or film, even if I'm hating it.
Notes in my wallet all have to be facing the same way.
Light switches have to be set correctly. You can't turn on a light on one switch and off on another as then both switches will appear on but the light will be off.
Knives, forks and spoons have to be in the drawer in their proper slots
Grammar and spelling mistakes (even more so when they're my own)

Maybe but it still drives me mad when people don't stick to the rules of cutlery drawers.

Wash my hands when I think they've touched something even the tiniest bit dirty. Used to do it all the time but nowadays it's not as bad.
Check plates and cutlery down to a T to make sure they're clean before using them.
Close the front door, get into the car and once I reach the corner I think 'fook', turn back and check if the door is closed. It's always closed.
That thing where if I tie one shoe lace, the other feels weird and I have to re-tie it.

Not sure if these are OCD tendencies, but they're a pain in the b0llocks.

Hard to explain mine, Under the armpits or behind the knees, you can sort of move a muscle or ligament, one either side.
So under my pits say, I have to move the one at he front, once, then the one at the back twice, then the one at the front again.
Always four times, for each armpit and knee.

In fairness I can hide this well!!!

Also if I do something with the right hand side of my body, I have to do the same on the left, like, scratch the right side of my face with my right hand, I have to do it with my left hand. Then I have to do it on the left side of my face, with both hands!
