Opinions on HP Pavillion Laptops?

I am thinking of getting this
    http://www.harveynorman.ie/computing/laptops/hp-pavilion-15-laptop-15-n208sa.html

But I am a bit wary as I keep reading stories online about HP laptops overheating (though they seem to be older models people are complaining about but it is worrying).

Harvey Normans have a cash back offer on people's old computers (laptops for sale at 499Euro plus qualify apparently), so this would substantially reduce the actual cost of this computer if I got the full cashback.

But having said that I just saw this (with an Core i5 processor) http://www.pcworld.ie/Product/ACER-E1572-156and039and039-Laptop/317133/104.10#delivery

So a bit torn as to which to get. I don't need anything very fancy but want to be able to watch live TV and films (e.g. Netflix) online, as well as the various TV players. Other than that I do just basic e-mail and web browsing online. I don't do any gaming.

Anyway I would be interested in opinions on either of these.

I'm also looking at that HP laptop in Harvey Norman. My old laptop is slightly battered so I don't know if I'll qualify for the cash back, might call in tomorrow and see. Let us know which laptop you go for and what you think of it.
I'm in a similar position as you, just want a decently priced laptop that does the things you mentioned. Nothing jumping out at me at present.

Amateur net research of HP will pull up overheating issues that are a 7-8 year old issue, and in tech terms, ancient history. Short version is the supplier of GPUs and come Motherboards they used sold them defective parts in staggering quantities. HP and several other companies like Apple, have had tepid business relationships with Nvidia ever since.

HP is actually big about mentioning their CoolSense features in their laptops which is just a bunch of buzztalk honestly but it changes the cooling/performance profile of the laptop based on whether its used on a flat surface or if its being lapped.

Acer, meanwhile, while I cant name any specific incident its more a case of yes they're a spiffy little company that likes to try and innovate but I feel like they just shave cost in the wrong places. Their laptops end up feeling rather cheap and most of their models you will notice when you get one in your hand either have low resolution displays or are otherwise forced into high DPI scaling especially on their touchscreens. That said you can find a good bargain in an acer once in a while, but the killer for me is typically screen resolution the last year or two. HPs tend to put a better screen in (the best screens I've seen are in Apple, Lenovo, Sony, and Samsung, and HP probably in that order - though all of the above are above or at the standard you'd expect)

Short version honestly bunny-boils down to that in most cases I recommended a customer get an HP in the mid-low range for best overall value.
