For or Against the Midi?

I'm going through the shopping website - Asos, Littlewoods, Missguided - looking for some nice (daytime wear) skirts and I'm coming up against a dilemma: Midi or Mini?

Now, on the one hand, there is always a place for a mini skirt. But I feel strange (and I might be wrong here) as a mum (at 28) of 2 wearing a mini length skirt when out with the kids. Like this looks really cool, but would you believe me in it? And is this look more mutton than lamb?

Then there's the midi skirt. Never would have thought it myself but some of them do look nice. Now I stay away from anything too tight fitting anyway (bodycon dresses etc) so the pencil skirt is out no matter the length. But this and this look really nice.

Problem is I don't wear high heels. Well I would if you could get stilettos or similar in less than 4 inches which you can't anymore. So would it look frumpy with something like this (not the exact boot I own but similar.

And where do you stand on this midi? Yea or nay? Is the frump? Or back in cool? And how would you dress it?

I think the midis depend very much on your height. I'm 5 foot 4 and I wouldn't consider one because I think they make me look shorter and frumpy. If your taller they could look great. I don't think the minis look 'mutton' - pretty much all my skirts are minis, I wear them fairly casually with low heeled boots or flat boots. I'm 28 and although I'm not a mum I wouldn't see any problem with a mum wearing them! I much prefer the A-line denim style to the black skirt, I'm not a fan of that style in a short skirt for casual wear. Dressed up with heels it could look really well though.

    I'm 30, no kids :)

The first mini is fine in my opinion. The second one I wouldn't wear as it looks a little too short for me and the way it flares look like you could accidentally reveal too much. :o

The first midi looks quite bulky with the pleat and pockets and could make you look bigger than you are unless you are very slender. The second midi looks nice. That scuba material can be very flattering.

Midi skirts don't really suit me as I have wide hips so they make me look bigger than I am. I would really only wear minis or pencil skirts.

I have a terrible body shape and over the years have tried on various styles of skirts. They all look horrible.
For this reason, I don't own one skirt :-(

    I'm sorry to hear that.

I am tall, so the midi should have some good qualities for me... right? We'll see. I'm going to get the denim mini and the scuba midi and see. Though I'll check the returns policy first I think.

I think both the mini and the midi can look nice dressed up or down depending on how you style them. I have little ones myself and from a practical pov I always wear thick tights or leggings with a mini, If it's warm knee or 3/4 length ones. When you've got toddler(s) you need to be able to run and bend down any which way without worrying about exposing yourself. I think both can be nice with flats- boots or Birkenstocks or Mary Janes or slip ons. I think the mini could be nice with low converse style runners too.

im 5'2" so I tend to avoid midis as they can just make me look shorter than I am and I dont need that!

Love the first mini in your links. The second one I dont like the flare on it. I actually really like the first midi skirt you linked to as well. The second one is lovely but not my style and would just swamp me.

I love some of the midi dresses but they wouldn't suit me, but if you're tall enough then go for it :-)

I'm a 28 year old mum as well, and most of my skirts are mini, even the ones I wear to work. I wear them with black tights and boots during the winter. That said, I love knee length skirts & dresses, but I'm 5'6 and have long legs so they suit me.

I'm 5'5" and slim, I love Midis,I wear them with flat ankle boots, if it's crappy weather I'll layer them up with a big jumper, tights and long boots. I think it's down to your body shape, I'm not tall but because I'm slim they suit me.
