Deluded MPG claims

How are there so many deluded people selling cars these day. So far I have seen claims of a 520d with 60-70mpg even the official figures only claimed 55.4mpg. A Kia Cee'd claiming 60+mpg and a 320d claiming 56mpg.

Im guessing youre talking about private sellers, yeah?

Its the same with private sellers, and dealers sometimes who knock 0.1 off the engine size, I presume to make it look like it will be cheaper to tax. Ive seen loads of 1.5 Cooper S, 1.9 Golf GTI's etc.

I love the ones where the sellers say 1000 km (or whatever ) every tank. For example I have a 1.6tdci focus and I know for a fact it will only do 850km to a tank absolute max and anyone I know with one gets the same that's all they do. Flick onto donedeal save focuses "1000km to a tank everytime" so I don't know whether the owners push them the other 150km or what :pac:

I once did 91 mpg going downhill, I will use this figure when selling car. Thanks for advice!

It's simple. You tell people things they want to hear or see. The same way some people buy new cars that manufacturers claimed had high mpg and then give out when they don't achieve the same figures. It's known as marketing.

56mpg is achievable in a 320d. It's the most depressing experience imaginable, but is achievable. I averaged 59mpg on a trip to Ede in the Netherlands last year. There was enough in a single tank not only to get from Ireland to the Netherlands across Wales, England, France and Belgium but enough to potter around for three days there before refuelling.

I would say that a more realistic motorway figure would be mid to high 40s and mid-30s for pure city driving.

Depends on the size of the tank. My A4 TDI will comfortably do 620miles/1000km on a full tank (68L)

What really gets me is when they take a picture of a "60mpg" readout from the Dashboard ...... yeah you reset the gauge and coast along for half a mile

Exorbitant claims such as these would make me questions a sellers honesty and really put me off a car

I saw an ad on DD last night where the highly intelligent seller proclaimed that the car was a miser on juice and a tenner done him all week.

I know that. I was just saying I people often exaggerate it. Like our newer octavia will do 1100km to a tank (55l) but a mk2 1.6 diesel focus won't where as people on donedeal say they will. I know there only trying to make the car look attractive and all that but it doesn't give people a clear picture of what there buying.

I get 642mpg from time to time :)

Van I'm in at the mo does 850km to a tank, I was well impressed. Pulled in to fill it for the first time(it was brimmed by dealer) and she swallowed €140 of diesel till it clunked off.. I then struggled to do some maths to see if I was still impressed..still struggling.
Edit, did the math, 26 odd MPG, which for a damn big van doing 130kph almost all day, is pretty ok.

Getting about 650 miles to 52lt tank in 1.3 diesel astra, lots of town driving. Filled up once and drove to ballyshannon, 120 miles, drove like a nun and filled up when we arrived, 9.85 to brim it so worked out around 80mpg.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,792 ✭✭✭Ded_Zebra

I saw a LandCruiser on DD once claiming 50MPG :P:P

I think it's a lot to do with people not knowing the difference between an average over 20km or whatever and the real average. For example, me and my dad recently reset the MPG in the 928 after filling up (with the car warmed up) and driving to the RDS from wicklow. When we got there the average was reading 28MPG. People are taking these kind of readings and putting them in their ads.

It was then reset again and a guy took it for a test drive, after that it averaged 7.3MPG :D:D

My OBC will only display up to 99.9mpg :( Clearly I'm being robbed.

You also get muppets stating that most scientific of statements in ads "will do 200 miles for a tenner"

That's a glitch on carzone for over 10 years.

I'm getting around 60mpg from a new MINI diesel this week, mix of town and main roads. I havent been going that handy in it either.

I filled my A6 1.9 to the brim and did 620 miles until the light came on. Filled it again and it took 61 litres. It worked out about 46mpg iirc. Driving like an absolute granny too. Usual mpg is around 40.

Maybe they are the morons driving on the motorway in top gear at 80 km/h.

Depends on the driver/car and type of driving.

My overall average for last 36K miles comes in at 55.796 MPG, in a '03 A4 B6 1.9TDi (130) with 240K miles on the clock...

And that's driving mostly at the speed limit, even towing a trailer on the rear occasion.

I've actually got 900 miles (1,440 kms) out of a tank from brim to empty on a few long runs up and down the country, but don't usually brim the tank as it affect the economy by as much as 3-4 mpg... 70 litres of fuel weighs a lot. :p only fill it up completely when i want to see how the consumption is going.

I record all fill-ups on an app called aCar (Android), so not to be fooling myself.

I don't want to call you a liar but that is very hard to believe!

The A4 has a 68L Tank.... if you covered 900 miles, that works out at and AVERAGE consumption of 4.7l/100km (which in old money is over 60 MPG - combined!)

And that would be calculating the consumption assuming you used up ALL 68 liters in the tank, which unless you came to a grinding halt it'd be safe to say you didn't!

    I also drive a B6 1.9TDI, 620miles is usually achievable on a tank. If I do a lot of short journeys I'd get about 580miles ... On long journey's If I drive like a nun I can squeez ~ 700miles...

    But 900 miles???!!

for the extra 200miles you're doing , I'd easily need another 18-20 Litres of Diesel!

    Depends on where/how it's driven.

1200 per tank is possible with the average 1.5 turbodiesel. Cruising at constant speed on a motorway.
This drops to 800 or so, city traffic all stops and starts and the like.

And the guage in the car seems to overread fuel consumption slightly as when it tells me I've burned 40 litres, It'll only swallow 38-39 most times. Which is handy.

Maybe they are the morons driving on the motorway in top gear at 80 km/h.

I do that in the C5. Pop on cruise control at 90, throw on the radio and see what's going on in the world and enjoy my half hour in the car before work.

No rush at 5.45 in the morning!

A4 B6 Saloon has an official tank capacity of 70L plus reserve which i don't have figures on.. you get more in the tank if you press the vent button, I estimate about 4 litres more in the Audi, I do that if I have a particularly long journey to do, and want to avoid fill ups, getting in a total of about 74 litres.

Filling diesel vehicles - Vent trick

    Official economy figures for my model is 4.4L / 7.4L / 5.5L

    Official Specification for A4 B6 AWX/5 Speed

The way I calculate it is as follow, correct me if I'm wrong.

My best mpg over a few fills while travelling over to the UK was 59.8 mpg, which approximates to 4.72L per 100 km.

Tank capacity of 70L (without vent trick)

    So..

    (70L / 4.72) * 100 = 1,483 km
    (1,483 / 8) * 5 = 926 miles!

Not saving I get that all the time, and usually get around 750-780 depending on how much town driving I have to do.

A guy I know has the newer B7 with the 2.0 Tdi (170bhp), and only get 630 miles to the tank, but he drive much harder than I do.

    74 litres?!?!!

It has a 68 litre capacity, 61 litre if its a Quattro!

As for getting an extra 4 litres if you press the vent button?!? - what on earth have you been smoking!! :D

I have the exact same car as you (less mileage even) and I'm sorry but 900 miles on 1 tank is impossible.

Drive the car till the Range is at 0 (even more if you have the balls) and go fill her up till it pours out of the tank.... I GUARANTEE you wont get more than ~65 litres in there!!!!

Well you must have a different manual than mine, because my operators manual states on page 377 that the tank capacity is 70L. it also states on page 383, that both the 4 and 6 pot diesel quattro have a tank capacity of 66 litres.

I wondered where you got the claimed 61 litre and 68 litre variations, so I checked all configurations in the manual, and it made no reference to the 61L or 68L tanks.

Out of curiosity, where did you get those figures?
    ION08 wrote: »

Don't smoke, and don't make up tank capacities without checking them out either.

Venting was introduced and is more relevant to petrol engined cars, because petrol expands when hot, much more enthusiastically than diesel.

There is a vent at the top of the filler neck from the top of the tank, so you can fill the tank without the filling pump shutting off.
There's also a valve there that is shut when the cap is off, and open when the filler cap is in place.

If you press this vent valve when the cap is off, you get to use the extra expansion area of the tank, try it for yourself!

Look closely when you have the cap off for the next fill, think the valve is at 9 o'clock position on the Audi.

I find the main problem is people not knowing what's really City, mixed and Motorway driving. The amount of times you have guys on this Board claiming 45+ mpg City is out of control. I think they drive into a City and having left the OBC and not reseted it, they think they're getting what it still displays, not knowing that its still giving the average over the entire tank since it was last reset.

I've never actually had what I'd call "a very economical car". I had a few Vag 1.9 tdis, that all drank more than expected, a PSA 1.9d that gulped it down like an alcoholic, the current 2,0D Primera that thinks it's a gutless 2.5 petrol and a Skoda that appeared to have a hole in the tank.. the only vaguely economical car I've ever owned was a 1.6 petrol Citroen Picasso that was brilliant. It could be the way I drive.. The damn Skyline, that everyone told me I was nuts to buy as it would guzzle fuel, seems as economical as anything else I've ever had.
