Do you wet the sensor before putting it on?

The part that touches your skin needs to be moist

Do you have a speed/cadence sensor as well?

I have found that all readings can be messed up if the battery is not right on the speed/cadence sensor.

Lastly are you sure the replacement battery is ok (is it new?)

Yeah I'm getting this the last few weeks.
I don't see how the battery in the spped/cadence sensor can have any effect.

Are you sure it's not just a problem with Garmin Connect?

I uploaded a ride this morning and it told me I did 36k in 2 secs at 69000 kmh, the HR and cadence data were both blank, but the GPS track was perfect.

When I uploaded the same workout to Training Peaks everything was fine (and a tad slower).

Edit: GC has given lots of funny numbers the last few weeks.

Yeah. The battery is often near spent but I've finally resorted to getting the polar strap. See dc rainmaker posts online about this. I've yet to try the polar myself (waiting fir amazon) but the garmin strap is junk

The new Garmin HRM3 is way more reliable, as I even found that the Polar strap and garmin sensor combination was prone to spikes and drops.

I have the new HRM3 and while it's definitely better it's still not perfect. The biggest issue I find is static depending on what you're wearing.

If I ride topless on the turbo it's 100% everytime.

    Me neither! :o

But the garmin seemed to get quite confused when there was a weak/intermittent signal from the speed sensor; perhaps it was auto stopping and restarting without my noticing it. That or maybe I re - paired the devices after the speed/cadence sensor battery replacement.

Yeah i bought the new 510 in late July and it was fine for a few weeks but for the last month it's performance can best be described as patchy. Some days half way through a ride it stops registering a reading on the unit.
Despite checking connection points, rebooting etc i returned it to the shop, they got it working but after a cycle today where there were a few hiccups  i can see this making a return trip to the manufacturers. Also today the website is sh**e, since the layout was changed that has also had a few wobbles.
The expression "if it isn't broke don't fix it" springs to mind.
