whats the story with bringing in car from uk ie 2011 vw - would the manufacturers warranty be honoured here and how does one check whether its still under warranty

There's a 2 year warranty as standard on all new cars purchased within the EU, any additional warranty supplied is at the descretion of the manufacturer and would be up to the distributor in this country to honour, some will, some won't. Think VW's from 2011/20012 came with a 3 year warranty in the UK.

I think if it's a manufacturer's warranty and it came with the car when new, it will stay with the car. A new owner or a new number plate does not change the fact that it's the same car.

I imported a BMW in 2009, 3 years warranty in England, 2 years warranty in Ireland. There was no problem about the third year of the warranty here, in fact the local BMW main dealer printed a warranty document for me from the BMW system showing the third year.

I've been through this with my own VW recently.

A new VW originally bought in the UK came with a 3 year VW warranty. However VW Ireland will only recognise and honour the first 2 years of the warranty so if you need a problem fixed under warranty in the 3rd year then you need to take it to a dealer up in Northern Ireland (I can personally recommend Isaac Agnew's in Belfast). The car having southern plates makes absolutely no difference as long as you can get the car to a UK VW dealer.

BMW are different as in BMW UK and BMW Ireland are the same company so a warranty claim through either is the same thing. However VW UK and VW Ireland are two separate entities and don't play ball together.

BTW the UK warranty will run for 3 years or 60k miles from first date of original registration.

Anyway 2year warranty is crap in this day and age - does anybody know off hand what any cars with 4 - 5 year warranty apart from kia?

Standard 3 year/100,000km warranty for 2011 cars which could be bumped up to 4 years cover by buying extended cover before the original warranty ran out.

4 year /100,000km warranty on new cars from 1st Feb 2012,

According to the website there was a promotional 5 year/100,000km warranty on "New Mégane ordered between 1st July 2011 and 31st July 2011 (excluding Bizu models)"

Incidentally Renault Ireland offer a 5 year unlimited mileage warranty as standard on new cars since 1st March 2013. From 2010 it was possible to buy an extended warranty the standard 3 year unlimited mileage warranty to a 5 year unlimited mileage one.
