I would have said that a 1.4 Polo may have a different gearbox to a 1.0 litre but if your mechanic has replaced the gearbox already he would check they were compatible before fitting?

They're interchangeable but the final drive ratio is longer so it'll be a pig to drive. 5th will be unusable.

Well he replaced it and it works now, but I feel that the engine is not using full power and he said he doesnt know exactly how it works as he did it for the first time for VW.I am afraid that the engine will be destroy in time

Oh its a 1.0 box in a 1.4? Your fuel economy will go out the window, you may as well gave no 5th gear now.
Car should be revving higher but going slower since the swap.

The final drive ratio is lower in the 1.0 box?

    Yes, you'll notice a 1.4 revs lower particularly in 4th and 5th.

Something similar happened a friend of mine years ago,the head gasket failed as a result.

Thanks for your advices.Just in case do you know where can I find a second hand gearbox for VW 1.4?I live in Dublin 17

It will be hard enough to find one. You can't just swap one from a 1.4 seat cordoba/Ibiza for example. Has to come from a polo.

As long as the gearbox bearings, final drive etc can take the higher torque then you should be OK.
I wouldnt be too worried unless you are doing alot of high speed motorway travel, Just keep an eye on the RPM's, you may find around town that you can use the next gear up compared with the 1.4 Box.
