    Hi chaps,
I'm considering getting my x type remapped
    It's 130bhp(was new :) )
I seen plug in chips boasting 30bhp extra then research shown it's not really the case as it just forces more fuele in so a remap looks like a option.
    What results will remap show?
Can I have more mpg and power or is it one or the other?
    Any dangers?
    Is it expensive?
Will it take long or just plus it into the computer hit a few buttons and 10min later I'm away?

A quick look online suggests you can get about 150-5 out of the engine with a remap. That's assuming it's in top nick of course. You may well see a bit less.

It's in pretty good order well maintained 120k full book and that..
I'm just looking for a bit more punch won't be dyno testing it and use it as a mines faster than yours job.
    Just a bit more responsive

The main thing you'll notice in a remap is a change in throttle response. Even if the power doesn't change much, the car will feel more "alive".

The best remaps you'll get will be someone that will stick on a Dyno and take before during and after readings, so they can a tailor a map specific to your car. These tend to be more expensive for obvious reasons.

Other places will just upload a generic map to your car and might give you a dyno reading after to show the new figures, cheaper but quite as tuned as it could be.

You can also buy handsets online that will allow you to upload a map yourself, this tends to be the cheapest option, but also gives you the least insight.

For an everyday Jag X-Type, I'd probably lean towards option 2 myself.

    Where are you based?

thanks for the extra info, sounds like option 2 could be the way to go,as tempting as getting a gizmo and playing around myself but might do more harm than good ;)

im not to far from wicklow town but wouldnt mind a spin to dublin to get it done.
any idea what it is likely to cost

I did get a remap done a few years ago on a 1.9L S40 diesel.

It was a standard remap, guy downloads the map from the car and uploads it to a site in Germany or somewhere, who reconfigure it and send it back. He was/is based in Bray.

I went for a performance remap. It did reduce fuel mileage slightly [from about 55mpg to 46-50 mpg, but don't quote me on that]. I still considered that good mpg, and worthwhile for the performance gain. Cost was about 250 or so.

Initially i did not notice any improvement and was rather underwhelmed, however after getting a service done (as part of a timing belt change) i could only say WOW.

Power across the gears was just ...there. and much smoother delivery across the bands.

I now have a 2.0L X-Type and am considering the same.

Before doing it though, i would suggest a service and EGR cleaning. While cleaning the EGR, also remove the inlet manifold itself and thoroughly clean as well.

Cost of this is free if done by yourself.

Drive the car for a few weeks so that the ECU recalibrates, then see if the performance gain is sufficient.

Possibly then look at a Terraclean. I got this done on a Focus diesel i had as an interim car. Cost is about 120.

Bear in mind though that this could expose problems with the injectors, which is a common problem with those 2.0L diesels (same as Mondeo). And force an injector replacement which could be costly. The problem would have been there already anyway.

Following that, if you‘re still not satisfied, then consider the remap.

Before that however, make sure that your hoses, hose clamps etc are in good condition, no splits etc.and well clamped /secure to deal with the extra pressure.

There is also the increased risk of turbo failure as well. But this is a small risk in my opinion.

    Hope this helps.
