Hi, i have a 1.3 opel combo combo and im wondering can i NCT it instead of doing a DOE, i always DOE'ed it but its getting to be expensive now at 111 euro a year. Plus im not saving anything on the commercial tax as its only 1.3. Thanks in advance.

    No it's a commercial vehicle.

I don't know, there have been similar threads, but everything has changed in the last year and my head is spinning from it all.

If it is a commercial than it has to go the commercial route. Over my 30 year van owning history the cost benefit has flipped flopped against owning a private vehicle vis a commercial one.

If it's a van, I keep it as a van, legislation hazels, not being able to carry anything as it might be work and so on, the reinsurance ~ too much of a headache I'd say.

    Indeed.
Just commercial vehicle is rather slang name everyone use, including motor tax offices.
Official name for such vehicle (in all law documents) is "goods vehicle".

And goods vehicles are always tested at CVRT centre (former DOE)

No you can't. When the first taxing a van privately thing came in a few years ago you could nct small car derived vans but this loophole was closed quickly. Now everything that's commerical is tested by cvrt.

It's important to distinguish some facts.

Taxation class has nothing to do with vehicle type here.

All goods vehicles are to be tested in CVRT centres.

Only vehicles that are to be tested in NCT centres are the following: "mechanically propelled vehicle having at least 4 wheels, used for the carriage of passengers and which has a maximum of 8 seats excluding the drivers seat."

Taxation class has nothing to do with it, so whether goods vehicle is taxed privately or commercially it makes no difference - it's still a goods vehicle.

I have to DOE my van next month for the first time under the new system. Anyone know if it will be a year from expiry date I'll get the cert or a year from original registration of the van as in the nct?
