Trading my car for a car of similar value.

    Hi,

This is not definite. Just testing waters.

I own a 2011 Opel Astra 1.3 CDTI. If I wanted to trade it in for a 2010 Golf, would the garage accept the trade in and maybe some extra cash. The reason I ask is because they are similarly priced but if I offer the garage some extra cash would they go for it?

Like I said, this just came to mind and nothing is definite, far from it.

I like the Astra but I drove the Golf 6 2 years ago and I liked it a bit more. Don't ask why I didn't get it in the first place.

    Your thoughts are welcome.

I don't know. Would you not sell your car privately and use the money to buy the golf.

They probably will with money their way but you will be one loosing out. Have you tried to sell the Astra privately?

Like I said, this thought came to me today. Looks wise I prefer the Astra, definitely, but I think the Golf drives better.
Also what sort of figures could I get if I was to sell my Astra privately? It has 45ish thousand miles.

Any other advice? Has anyone ever traded a car for a car of similar value?

I dont see how this is any different to any other trade in to be honest? They will give you what they think your car is worth to them and you will put it towards the cost of the Golf.

Reason I asked is because when I was trying to trade in my old car for a car of similar value, the dealer said it's too close to what the car I want to buy costs and therefore rejected the deal.

I did it a few years ago, first off they wanted 2k cash, I said no way and got them down to 200 eur in the end. The salesman thought he had someone to buy my trade in so was keen but six months later it was still sitting on his forecourt!

Ive never heard of that before. I can understand if they didnt want to accept a car as a trade in that was worth more than the car that was being purchased (ie with money going the buyers way), but I dont see the problem with them accepting a car that they can shift easily enough for similar money.

I suppose a lot depends on the cars either; they are not going to want to swap a car that they can sell easily enough for a car that will sit in the forecourt for months, even if the values are similar. I wouldnt have thought that would be an issue here though.

That would be correct. A trader will seldom basically swap one car for another unless he has a specific customer for that car.

I would imagine he would be talking a minimum of €2000 with the Astra

You'll definitely be putting money with your astra to buy a golf. At the end of the day a mk6 diesel golf is so much more sellable than a 1.3 cdti astra. So the garage are going to take in the harder to sell astra unless there making something on it.

The most I'd give them is €1000, not more, no way. I honestly don't think that a 2010 Golf should be worth more than a 2011 Astra. I know the dealer always wins and cash will always have to be handed over, but I wouldn't give them 2k. I would if it was a really high spec Golf.

I would've thought that a 1.3CDTI engine would attract first drivers?

The the 1.6tdi vag engine is one of the best Diesel engine of that size on the roads. Tbh as I said if your not willing to put the money with it you won't be able to get a golf I think you'd even be doing well to get one for 2k euro along with the astra. The golf is the most popular car in that segment. I was looking at getting a mk6 and probably will at some stage. They make ridiculous money buts that's just the unfortunate fact about them they also hold there value better so you could argue that. My outlook on it is you either pay the extra money to get the golf or don't get one. I know its a pain when you want one and there so expensive I'm in the same boat as such although won't be trading.

There is no way that a trader would deal at €1000 in my opinion unless he had a definite buyer.
He has to show the sale and put it through the books etc.
As for the 1.3 Cdti engine. That is a fiat engine and has its fair share of problems

The option of selling it privately is always there. The TRENDLINE Golf's are absolutely horrible. Wouldn't go near it.

It boils down to how much you think the car is worth to you.

By the time the garage has serviced, valeted, put tyres and put a warranty on a car in stands them money they need to recoup. The way I see it is its going to cost you money, and if this is the case you might as well price a newer one. The difference might not be as much as you think it you are already going to pay to go for something equivalent to your own.

You need se or comfortline spec. You may struggle to sell the astra privately simply because it's worth so much. But whatever you do best of luck with the sale and let's us know how you get on. Also if you get a mk6 make sure to stick up a few pics here I always like seeing them :)

If you have to spend money anyway, I would do this!

I rang a dealership and they said they will call me back with details. We'll see. I just know that I am not willing to pay a lot of money for a car that is probably better, but also a year older and has more miles.

Have a look on Carzone and compare prices. A quick check suggests that a the dealer asking price for a 2010 diesel 1.6 Golf is going to be the same at best, and probably higher, than the asking price for your 2011 Astra. Factor in the fact that you will not get anything close to the asking price for your car when you trade it in, and I think youre being rather unrealistic to expect to swap them for about a grand.

You're paying money to go for an older car, that money could be used towards a newer car.

Just say they want 2k from you for the 10 reg. You might be able to get a 12 reg for 5k with your own. That means 3k extra gets you a 2 year newer car. Figures are just to prove a point.

Fully understand. I'll see, rang another dealer there, he said he'd be asking for 1500-2000 with my car, on inspection.
