Hi all, Apologies if this has been covered before ( I guess it has but I could not find it through a forum search )

Basically I am wondering from a taxation point of view when does a car become vintage? and where could I find out the tax rates?

Also is it different for commercials?

    Thanks in advance

At 30 years old vintage tax €56 rate applies, commercials included.

30 years from the date of first registration, mind.

So a car first registered on 1 December 1984 wouldn't be eligible for vintage tax until 1st December 2014.

Another thing to note, only pre '80 cars are test exempt, all vintage commercials and campers must have DOE test.

No DOE test needed for vintage campers.

Indeed an alteration to last years announcement of just an extra year. However, if you look at the entry in the UK Budget publication:
2.153 VED: classic vehicle exemption – The government will introduce a rolling 40 year VED exemption for classic vehicles from 1 April 2014. (Finance Bill 2014 and future Finance Bills) (39)

I've bit highlighted looks like they have to include an extra year every Finance bill and any government forgetting/not bothering to do this, will put the brakes on the rolling aspect again. Don't forget, there's an election next year ;) (and the last rolling concession only lasted one parliament.)

..that'd completely fubar things here if our crowd followed suit...

You don't want to acknowledge that as truth because, deep down in places you don't talk about at the Green Party, you want me on that road, you need me on that road. I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the tax revenue and the very freedom to spend it that I provide, and then questions the manner in which I provide it. I would rather you just said "thank you" and went on your way. Otherwise I suggest you pick up a bus pass and get the ********* ********* off the road”

I wonder will the change of rules lead to lads in the UK with cars aproaching the 30 years considering selling up rather than holding on an extra 10 years for the vintage tax. Could see an influx of vehicles on the market and possibly heading over here

the other way round.... it isn't an extra ten years, their rolling exemption used to be 30 years ( I think) and was stopped from rolling for many years. They've merely started it rolling again from an older age. You will see LESS vehicles headed this way as people will be more likely to hold on to them if they are exempt.

thinking about it , I think it was actually 25 years

But in the UK it doesn't go from €1809 to €56 overnight, its a little more sensible in the first place.
