Is it worth upgrading from one to the other? I am more of a fan of the mario games than anything else. None of the newer releases are backwards compatible?is there any differences in the 3DS apart from colour?

A 3DS is not the same as a DS. It's like comparing a GameCube to a Nintendo 64. There's a big range of exclusive Mario games on the 3DS such as, as I'm probably forgetting a few, New Super Mario Bros 2, Mario and Luigi Dream Team, Yoshis New Island, Mario Tennis and there's the upcoming Mario Kart and Smash Bros too.

All your existing DS games will work on the 3DS so no need to get rid of those, but the quality of the graphics is a considerable leap.

Yes it is worth upgrading. You cannot play 3DS games on the DS lite.

There are 3 types of "3DS": 1) 2DS - not clamshell, mono sound (although stereo through headphones), no 3D function. 2) 3DS - clamshell, stereo speakers, 3D function. 3) 3DS XL - bigger screens than the other two.

Within those 3, the only difference is the colour.

Fan of Mario games - Super Mario 3D Land is the first game you must get. It also has Luigi's Mansion 2 and New Super Mario Bros 2.

The DS Lite is a stunning little machine, and I still love mine, but the 3DS is outstanding.
If you don't want to spend the farm on a 3DS, get the original model over on Adverts, there's a good few going for decent money link and the device is a great buy.
You'll have access to everything you played on the DS Lite and the entire brilliant 3DS library with no sign of a slow down in the number of brilliant releases on it.
Most games don't even require the 3D switched on, so you can play it in much the way you'd play your old system just with better visuals.
So, no matter what your taste on the DS Lite, there'll be some great new games you'll love on the 3DS.
As abbir says, Super Mario 3D Land is a must have, Kid Icarus is another, Metal Gear Solid 3D, and then you'll also have access to the online shop and the great games there, like Pushblok.

SteamWorld Dig! Got it on sale this week. So disappointed when I finished it! Absolutely and thoroughly enjoyed it.

Its definitely worth upgrading, the catalogue of games for it now is really quite decent (especially compared to when I got mine about a year or so after launch) and a lot of great titles can be picked up for a decent enough price.

Just to say though, that if you're stuck between getting the XL and standard model of the 3DS, the XL model is much better for prolonged use. I have one of each and I find that the XL sits better in my hands and is more comfortable to use, and I would have fairly smallish hands. Also the screen size on XL is pretty much the size of the whole standard console. :) The downsides of 3DSXL are that the console doesn't come with a charger, you need to buy one separately, and that the bigger screen is that a some of the games, especially older DS ones, can be a bit pixel-ly but its not something I didn't adjust to after a while.

Amazon have a good price on the standard model at the minute, which come in a variety of colours with with 3 different games depending on the colour of the console: Linky. (Personally I'd go for the one in black that comes with Castlevania).

I don't know what the deals are like on the XL at the minute, I know Amazon had them for around £125 just before Christmas which was a decent enough price for one. Apparently Gamestop have the Zelda link between worlds one for €240 Link.

Just a word of warning though the 3DS, be it the XL or the standard model is region locked unlike the DS, so make sure you get a PAL region one if you want to play the games you'd be getting here!
