Ok guys and gals, not a car guy personally so looking for a bit of advice, I currently have a Ford Focus Zetec 1.6 petrol and am thinking about trading it in and getting a Ford Mondeo, also 1.6 petrol from the same garage.

What are they like in terms of running costs? Obviously I would assume that they drive quite similar both being Fords but are they a good car? Easy to maintain etc?

The Mondeo is a lot bigger and heavier than your Focus. The 1.6 petrol Mondeo is adequate if you are just pottering around town but other than that it struggles in such a heavy body and as a result fuel economy suffers.

They're a good car alright. Never driven a petrol one mind. If you're doing little mileage then obviously petrol is where you should stay. Parts can be pricey enough when they go though. You should be able to do a good deal on one, seeing as the majority need think they need a diesel post 2008!

Get a 1.8 or preferably a 2 liter. Mines a 2 liter and is better on fuel than a 1.6, perversly. tax is a bit more, but much better to drive and fuel soon culls the difference.

Thanks for the replies, my concern was that the heavier frame would be putting extra strain on the fuel economy, wouldnt say we do too much driving, our current car is an 07 and there is only 80,000km on it so I know thats below average anyway

I had always thought a 1.8 petrol eats fuel for some reason, it has put me off cars in the past! I will take the advice on board anyway and may keep looking, just need a change as the family is growing and a bigger car is required! Had a look at a Toyota Avensis Strata Sport yesterday, everything was great on it but the mileage, 170k and the car is 6 years old, petrol. Wouldnt have been so bad except the guy was trying to convince me my mileage was about average and so was his :)

It wouldnt sit right with me to go up in years with a car yet double my mileage either!

I have a 2008 Mondeo Titanium 2L bought new. It's fuel economy is good, generally averaging around 40 mpg on motorways at legal speed limits. It's an excellent car, comfortable to drive, and to date 100% reliable. The killer is the €710 a year tax!

That model Mondeo was never available with a 1.8 litre petrol engine. It was 1.6, 2.0, 2.3 and 2.5 litre.

OP you should consider a Mazda 6 petrol too, they start from 1.8 litre and just as nice to drive as the Mondeo.

I was also looking into the mazda 6 during my mondeo search. Nice looking car alright, but a lot less available to choose from.

Up to 05/06 there were plenty of 1.8 petrols. :)

Since the OP mentioned 1.6 it is fair to assume he is talking about the Mk IV Mondeo from 2007 onwards.

Is the boot interior the same in the saloon and hatchback? The cover board in mine is a bit worse for wear. sorry for slightly OT question

Do you mean the mat? No, they're different sizes.

I would consider getting rid of my 1.8TDCi and go for something like yours. I wouldn't get that much more doing long drives myself.

Thought they would be. I guess I will just template some ply for better support in the boot.

Ya they are very flimsy all right. Two pieces of thin carpet, with a load of "stuffing" in the middle! Gets tattered easilly.

The lift-back likes dumping the water off the bootlid into the boot area when you open the tailgate. Drives.me.nuts. That and the springs snapping, which they are fond of. Mine is currently lopsided- I havn't looked, I'll buy a spring tomorrow and hope the tyre survived. It usually doesn't..new as well..bummer.

Be great if I could get some advise about this car. I am not a car person at all but am going to see the below car on Friday. Anyone any idea what would be a good price etc and things that I should be aware of before going to see it. Have never bought a car before and don't want to get ripped off.

    Any help would be great

Caseys in Roscommon are an ex ford dealer, and they are fairly genuine. I'm nearly positive I seen that car outside a private house in Roscommon town for this last few years. It's a very basic spec, the way mondeo specs are - Lx, Zetec, ghia, titanium, titanium X, titanium X sport, all of them specs were available in Ireland in 2008, apart from titanium, which is an English Spec. Imo, that car is a tad overpriced for what it is, it's the entry spec, smallest engine in a mondeo. I'd be aiming for a higher spec, zetec at least, which has more toys.

Bog standard entry level Mondeo with an underpowered 1.6 litre engine that is also on the thirsty side. If I had to buy that car I certainly would not pay anywhere near €8k for it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 88 ✭✭cmac8

Ya the told me it was a neighbour of his that runs a pub in Roscommon. I don't usually pass much heed of those kind of stories but maybe that where you saw it.

I am a bit concerned about the state of the steering wheel!

What price would you think would be appropriate? 7.5?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,845 ✭✭✭Noccy_Mondy

€7k would be more like it ideally. Do you need a petrol? The wheel is a bit strange alrite, mine has nearly 110,000 miles on it and it's wheel is perfect. Maybe something was put on it, causing the rubber to wear away?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 88 ✭✭cmac8

Not fussed. We both drive to the same place at work which is only 5miles from where we live so its nit like we will be clocking up high mileage in it.

Is Casey regarded well as a place to deal with?

If I could get it for around 7k, you think that would be alright?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 51,360 ✭✭✭✭bazz26

Do you need a car the size of a Mondeo?

Nice looking Ceed here within budget:

Petrol is where you should stay so. It's a heavy car and that engine is sluggish in it. Not really suitable for a car its size. I haven't heard any horror stories from them, but good luck trying to get them down to 7k, maybe though. They have another place in Castlebar, maybe they have more there that suits you.

We are getting married in August so would be looking for a decent size car as hopefully starting a family soon and always liked the Mondeo

Thanks for the advise lads. I will see what I can negotiate them down to, appreciate the help. Would have hated to buy from somewhere with a dogey background for way over the odds. Our current car won't see out the month even if we have to pay slightly over d odds, makes up for the repair costs of our current 00 Peugeot 206 ( she has served us well)

Take a look at it anyway, don't pay anywhere near that price, they seem to think they still are ford dealers and so can charge what they like
