Why? Does the speed limit change after midnight or something?

There could be kids finishing detention.

Is it still a school zone outside of school hours? That's just odd.

I was coming back from Kenmare one night and saw them parked outside the Church by the Recycing Bins in Kilgarvan at approx 1am & never seen them in the village since and often drive that road. That is odd.

There are no "school zones", like in some countries. The speed limit is the limit no matter what time it is or what day it is.

    Thats a very low speed ... 30kmph

A school Zone here is 40kmph during school term and between school hours. It then reverts to the higher speed.

No... It's a 50 kph zone 24 / 7, by the school , up towards the roundabout and back in by the village all the same speed, all the time.
I have been speeding along there, and known I shouldn't ... Less likely to if there are known to be cameras ...
They do the same on the n25 but you know the one spot they're likely to be,makes it too easy to speed...I Don't know the all "spots" between ballincolig and macroom, so I'm less likely to speed ...

Dude ....ffs one day you may come unstuck.

Imagine trying to sell this as your reason for excessive speed when facing a death by dangerous driving charge.

They are rare (and more rare than they ought to be) but there are zones where periodic speed limits apply. The Dublin Port Tunnel is the easiest example I can think of but I have seen speed limits that change depending on the time of day near schools. It is covered in the ROTR at p.112: http://www.rulesoftheroad.ie/rules-of-the-road-eng.pdf

What I'm trying to say is the more I think I may get caught somewhere for speeding , the less likely I am to speed !
Like most people I guess ....

Ehhh, incorrect. I know of a number of schools where there are ''part time'' flashing 30kph signs.

Don't know how they are controlled, by timer or by school.

Usually the biggest risk in a school area , is parents picking up and dropping off kids, parking on foot paths , bikelanes, bus stops, stopping in lane ...I suppose at least it brings trafic to a standstill, with kids dodging in and out between parked and stopped cars...

It may have just been doing a survey.

This is the location - school, church and community centre on a road with no footpath on one side (and not much on the other), just off the Main Street.

    Is that a 50kph or a 30kph zone ??
Not that you could or should do much speed at any hour due to narrowness of road and speed bumps as well ... ,

Slightly OT but you reminded me with your Port Tunnel comment...saw a recent RTE/TV3? documentary on road behaviour and they had a piece showing the Port tunnel traffic van driver commenting on a driver tailgating the car in front. They then held the driver at the toll barrier until the guy came up and gave her a lecture.

What powers does he have to detain a car and then to issue road traffic advice...?

The Port Tunnel Bylaws covers same.

Ok, I appoligise to the op. I was sure he meant 30 mph (50kph zone) ...drove down church road on Friday and noticed 30 KPH signs for the first time ever ....
It's not a bad idea as it's a narrow road between 2 primary school ,a church and a care home and you'd struggle to do speed between the road condition ,speed bumps and zebra crossing but at 2 in the morning to speed trap it .... Unless there've been complaints ...

I have seen many times "gatso van" in my area when driving. They track the speed by using their speed cameras and red light cameras. They are doing well and appreciative work.
