Put too much oil in this morning. Realised after driving for five mins. Checked dip stick and its over the level. Some grey smoke coming out. How do I resolve and will it be costly?

You're in luck. Lidl is selling oil extractors.

Depending on how old your car is and how much over the top you are it could be fairly serious as regards cat damage.
If in doubt or if you have a cat do not drive

Errr......should be as straight forward as draining some out through the sump plug?

The problem is that it's easy to remove the entire plug and it can be a b***h to put it back while oil is flowing out, or at least very messy.

Ah sure, better to have oily hands than spend 18 euro on an oil extractor that you might only use once!

As long as OP has a bit of oil left over to top it up if he drains more than intended, should work out fine.

We need to knowvifvit is diesel or petrol. An overfilled diesel can run on its own fumes, and we need to know if it has a cat.
What will happen in all situations of overfilling, not just a littlevover, is that the oil will foam and foaming oil will not protect an engine

It's a 03 petrol almera. Do I need to jack it up to release the plug? I went over the max by a bit judging by the dipstick. Mo cat issue then.

You should be ok so. Jacking up depends on how fat you are or you are not:D
BTW could you define "a bit" as that could have a bearing

Looking at the dipstick it's prob a good three inches over the max line

Jesus, don't work under the car if it's just supported by the jack!!!!

I do not have a problem getting the oil drain plug off most cars without jacking them up.
No body is suggesting-or at least I did not-that the OP should go under a jacked car without support

3 inches is a fair bit. The average car takes about a litre of oil to fill between min and max on the dip stick, i would say you have a bout 3 litres too much in the car, drain it ASAP.

    +1

you might be looking at more than a damaged CAT if you keep going.

3 inches over is way too much. You will get foaming and maybe oozing at the seals.
    Let the excess out immediately

I do believe this is a classic case of a little bit of knowledge is dangerous. Did you change the oil yourself? If so you must of put the full drum and a bit of another.
