How to help out a mate :)

So a little short story first
I began running mid-late last year, basicly preparing myself for the army which I hope to get into
I am ready for it no doubt, the fitness test is easy for me (not bragging but I think anyone who has an interest in exercise or does a little every now and again could do it no problem)

I told my family I am looking to join and well I am doing my test in 2 weeks time, but enough about me.
When my mate found out the army is recruiting he said he wants to try for it. Now basicly he is me 8months ago, He smokes alot, never runs or jogs at all even though I have asked him too join me for a few morning/afternoon jogs although he doesn't drink so I suppose that's a plus

I told him he left it too late too try and train for it, he told me he just wants too be able too pass the fitness test, once he can do that he will start jogging with me and going the gym with me when ever possible.

Now I do believe him, he normally keeps too his word so I want too help him
but in my opinion it might be too late for him

so for those here I am asking you how should I go about helping him

too pass the fitness test which is the 1st stage
he has too be able to do 20pushups 20situps and 2.4km jog in 11m40sec
20pushups and 20situps should be no problem considering he has a few weeks too apply for the test
its the 2.4km jog he should be worried about, specially been a smoker

I remember when I was a smoker I gave it up when I started training but my god I could not breath probably at all for weeks let alone run 2.4km

So I told him he has too give up the smokes, He seems willing which I like, suppose it shows some determination. I know he should of started training for this months ago, but the way I am looking at it is, if he doesn't pass the test, I will encourage him too stick with the routine too make his life more healthier

So I ask you nice gents

is it possible for him too run 2.4km effectiveally under 11min40sec within the next 4 weeks lets say?
if it is how should I bring him into it? I can run 12km at the moment but if I want too do it with him I can't just leave him behind while I do my own routine yano while hes catching his breath haha
