Boston Bomber: whatever happened to him?

Dzhokhar Tsarnaev was a 20 year Chechen Muslim who carried out the Boston bombings in April last year. His older brother was also involved but died in the car chase with the police. This was probably the biggest news story last year - the media went wild with 24 hour rolling news coverage of the event - but once the suspect was captured, everybody went quiet and the story just faded away. When the mainstream media goes suddenly silent, the conspiracy theorists fill the void.

Some people think it was a false flag attack to set up the precedent of the government putting a major city on lockdown. Are the government keeping the story hush so as not to stoke up anti-Islamic feeling?

Well, this update is from a couple of days ago...the censorship guys clearly aren't doing a good job.

The latest would appear to be..
US stands by charges against Boston Marathon bombing suspect Dzhokhar Tsarnaev

BOSTON (AP) — Federal prosecutors said Friday they oppose a defense motion to dismiss some charges against Boston Marathon bombing suspect Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, arguing that they aren't prejudicial.

Tsarnaev, 20, has pleaded not guilty in the terrorist attack at last year's marathon. Two pressure cooker bombs were placed near the marathon finish line, killing three people and wounding more than 260. Prosecutors have said they will seek the death penalty against Tsarnaev for crimes that include using a weapon of mass destruction.

The defense motion filed last month by Tsarnaev's lawyer Judy Clarke, one of the nation's foremost death penalty specialists, noted that more than half of the 30 federal charges carry a possible death sentence, and said the number of capital charges "appears designed to put a thumb on the scales of justice in favor of the death penalty."

In their filing, prosecutors called that argument "nonsense" and said the number of charges "reflects the number of crimes Tsarnaev committed."

Although some statutes overlap, prosecutors said, "it is clear that Congress intended to authorize multiple penalties for offenders who violate more than one statute."

That story you linked to is from a newspaper called "the Republican" lol.
In my OP I mentioned mainstream media. I haven't seen any updates about this guy on RTE, BBC, CNN, Fox etc. Do you not agree that the coverage of this story stopped very suddenly despite it involving a terrorist attack in a major US city?

It was a mighty thread so it was. Didn't get a stroke of work done!

That story you linked to is from a newspaper called "the Republican" lol.

It was an article by Associated Press, outlining a legal technicality while the guy is awaiting trial, which is of little interest to the European news channels.

You can't get more mainstream than AP.

If you are after conspiracies, there are richer pickings elsewhere.

I find it odd that no conspiracy theory has ever proven to be correct.
    Why is that?

Because once they are proven to be correct, they are no longer a theory.

The media and the public get bored of stories after a while, especially when the person is caught then they move on to the next piece of news.

There's been nothing to say really.

CBS and FOX ran that recent bit about the suspect wanting some charges dismissed though.

If you sort google news by date you can find recent articles

    Here's a few

    http://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2014/mar/14/us-stands-by-charges-against-boston-bomb-suspect/

    http://www.theguardian.com/world/2014/mar/01/boston-marathon-bombing-tsarnaev-defence-charges

    http://online.wsj.com/article/BT-CO-20140314-711921.html

    http://www.nydailynews.com/news/crime/boston-marathon-accused-bomber-joking-jail-security-attys-article-1.1711972

It's the same with the Aurora shooter, Lee Rigby's killers, etc - once it goes to court and proceedings take over it's not really world news anymore

What was the biggest global news story last year in your opinion? Note that there is no objective way of measuring "the biggest news story" so it's all opinion.

I don't wish to denigrade the Boston bombings but I believe the Egyptian coup, the Edward Snowden disclosures, The destruction caused by Typhoon Haiyan and the shopping centre terror attack in Nairobi were bigger stories.

And while it may not be of any importance, the birth of the royal baby in London was by far one of the biggest news stories of the year.

What's in the public interest and what the public are interested in are often two very different things.
