Flood Barrier Doors

    Hello All

    I am looking for three flood barriers - two on entrance to lifts in underground carpark (approx 4 foot wide) and one for a doorway which leads to Esb meter rooms (standard size doorway)
    Anyone suggest how to make something DIY version - there is a company selling these products but cost over €400 and seem way overpriced.
    Any advise etc would be appreciated.

    I seen houses that have slots fixed into wall either side of door, so when you think a flood is coming you just slot a sheet/door into place.

    What depth of water are you aiming to protect against and how much time will you have to react ?

    It's only an idea but you could screw 2 angle-iron uprights to the reveals and seal gaps with silicon, then any time a flood is expected you could bolt a length of timber plank through pre-drilled holes in the uprights.

    A piece of rubber hose screwed to the underside edge of the plank to aid the seal along the door cill, and something similar to seal the contact surface between the plank and uprights. It won't be easy to get a water-tight seal along the cill.

    A sheeted metal frame would be better than a plank but more expensive.

    No sorry, it's all in my head. :)

    3 foot is quite a depth and will apply quite a bit of force, especially on the 4ft wide barrier.

    From my calculations (which may be wrong) 3 foot of water will exert about 1160 pounds (526 kg) of force on a 4 foot wide barrier, and a little over half that for a 2.5 wide door. That's assuming the water is static. If the water was flowing towards the barrier the pressure could be more.

    2 foot of flowing water can easily move a car with a little help from buoyancy.
