Taxi drivers & Meat cleavers

Its well known if you take an non-nationals taxi, there has been no background check for his home country. Where as irish taxi drivers has had to be vetted. But why are giving visas for people to enter Ireland to drive taxis? Surely its something an EU citizen can do. I cant understand why the Irish Government thought an open door immigration policy was going to work flawlessly

I am guessing that there is no "Do you carry a meat cleaver" question in the Taxi Licencing application form?

The guy has had issues and still was allowed to drive a Taxi.

Judge Patrick McCartan imposed a sentence of three years and disqualified Banjo from driving for 20 years.

Detective Garda Padraic Jennings told Ronan Kennedy BL, prosecuting, that Mr Brazil was on temporary release from Mountjoy Prison and had gone to the prison to sign on as part of his release conditions. After doing this he flagged down Banjo's taxi and asked to go to Clondalkin.

He noticed the driver had plastic partition all around where he was sitting and thought that must be for the driver’s protection.

Banjo told the passenger he would have to pay in advance and Mr Brazil gave him €15 through a hole in the partition. When they arrived in Clondalkin the fare on the meter was less than €15 and Mr Brazil asked for his change.

The taxi driver then became aggressive and started cursing at the passenger and refused to give any money back. Mr Brazil reached out to take Banjo’s taxi identification in order to take down his name and taxi number.

Your point loses any legitimacy it has with this sensationalist phraseology. Ireland clearly doesn't have an open door immigration policy and people on here are smart enough to realise that.

And I would have gotten away with it, if it wasn't for you meddling kids.

Why do people insist on joking when someone has just been killed brutally and senselessly with the only consequence for the perpetrator being a paltry 3 year sentence?
I don't see any humour here.

    Oops, misread the article.

Silly me. Still not a laughing matter though.

The taxi driver claimed that Mr Brazil was armed with a gun and a knife and had tried to rob him.
    ...
Judge McCartan remarked after conviction that this line of defence was nonsense.
    ...
He said Banjo suffers from psychiatric and psychological problems and spent some time in the Central Mental Hospital in 2012.

In conclusion, Mr Banjo was highly strung and thought Mr Brazil was nuts.

He could easily have killed that passenger.

How do you know you are taking a non nationals taxi? Is it from the colour of their skin?

    Noticed his name was Banjo.

    Chuckled.

    Considered 'highly strung' pun.

    Noticed it was made already.

Being serious, the only bad taxi experiences I've had re: ripping off was with African drivers on more than one occasion but it's still not a reason to brand all non national drivers as the same.

What makes you think Irish taxi drivers are properly vetted ?

    http://www.rte.ie/news/2013/0123/364068-taxi-regulation-bill/
Taxi drivers with serious criminal convictions will be taken off the road under proposed new legislation revealed today.

Minister of State Alan Kelly said around 6,000 people with SPFV licences who are driving taxis have some form of criminal conviction.
    ...
He said the Taxi Regulation Bill 2013 will bring in lifetime bans for murder, manslaughter, rape, terrorism and other serious crimes.

IIRC when the taxi sector was first deregulated up to 1/3rd of applications were rejected because of criminal convictions. And when you consider the rate of convictions in this country that must mean a lot of criminals who weren't caught may have slipped through.
