so annoyed . Done driving test in raheny today and failed. When i got there was told an rsa person would be coming also ( lovely- so intimidating). To make it worse then he sat behind tester so i could see him clear as day in my mirror constantly which really put me off. Then on my reverse around the corner he was crouching diagnally in back seat and then sitting up - totally distracted me as it would and messed up. I have put in complaint - rsa customer agent said i could based on where he was sitting . Anyone else experienced this. So annoyed ive been doing lessons the last year and was so prepared. I know i would have passed if he wasn't there.

That is rotten luck. The RSA official was probably there doing an inspection of how the tester conducts his tests. It had nothing to do with you. I was told by a driving instructor that all of his students who sat their test with a RSA inspector present, failed the test. Even the really good ones, who he thought would breeze through the test failed it. That can't be a coincidence.

He said that the popular wisdom amongst instructors was that the testers were so nervous about their inspections, that they were incredibly picky during the test. They were so worried about being deemed to be too lenient, that they marked people down for borderline stuff, that they would let anyone else slide on. Hence the high failure rates.

I'd be interested to know what happens if you refuse to have an inspector there in the car during your test. Do they just say fair enough, or do they make you you forfeit your test and you lose your money, if you refuse to have an inspector there?

Sorry you failed but supervised tests are common enough. It's the testing supervisor making sure the tester is doing their job properly.

I don't believe for one second that the testers are scared when they go with them. Not a chance.

Where the supervisor sits depends on the pupil and their seat. Eg. I had a supervised test on Thursday. My pupil was over 6ft meaning his seat was as far back as it could go. This also meant the supervisor, who is at least 5ft 10 couldn't sit behind him (this would be the first choice). He had to sit behind the tester.

It's pot luck whether you get a supervised test. I think each tester gets 1 a month (don't quote me on that).

My pupil passed and I'm told the other 2 pupils who had the supervisor with them also passed.

While it's unfortunate you failed I'd be very surprised if it was deemed "unfair"
I didn't even get the chance to tell my pupil his test might be supervised. He came out the toilet and as he was walking towards me he was called. That and the supervisor came in a different car from normal!

I'd a superviser for my test too. Was funny cause I've a 3 door so head to awkwardly get into the back and then yeah for the reverse he was lying across the back seat, I found it kind of funny.

I'd say if anything the tester is likely to be at their fairest with the superviser there. I passed no problem anyway, at the end of the day people would complain if there wern't checked.

Suppose the only way of getting away without it would be to turn up in a little 2 seater like a MX5.

Thanks for advice. I rang rsa and two helpline people agreed that he should of sat behind me - im only 5 foot so my seat is pushed far to front. Had nothing to do with tester though she was a lovely girl . Afterwards my partner spoke to rsa official as i had to continue to work and he actually asked him did he know where he was sitting . So he clearly knew he shouldn't of been sitting where he was in my case. Will let u know what comes out of it . If they are inspecting their testers and have to do it on peoples tests they should have to at least tell the applicant in advance . Like its bad enough one tester without another person watching over them . And if he is making sure the test is marked fairly why didn't they consult each other afterwards before my result. He walked straight up the stairs in the centre an they didn't talk at all.

When you do a driving test you are being qualified to drive a car with passengers as well as one with an empty back seat. If he was obstructing your view when reversing you could have asked him to move.
