I got the trousers from L's base layer - never used base layer trousers before - am I suppose to have this one on and my regular pampers over it ? Does it not defeat the purpose of the nice padded pampers ?

Traditional wisdom is that you should never wear anything between the chamois and your skin!

so why they call it cycling base layer ?
they got no padding so it made me wonder, hence the Q?

Base layers are for during colder weather. Like said above your not supposed to wear anything between the chamois/pad and your skin but in winter and even now currently I still wear base layer shorts for warmth.

And is that comfortable having it on and pad over?

For lots of people that can lead to chaffing around their "gentlemens parts" - try it and see how you get on!

It's not shorts weather for me yet and the tights and 3/4 lengths I wear are made from a heavier fabric so there is no need to wear any other / under layers.

I doubt you'd need a base layer for cycling above freezing temperatures. If you do, you're going too slow.
